LOS ANGELESย -- No. 1 UCLA (1-0) opened the 2020 campaign, the inaugural season of Mapes Beach, with a 5-0 sweep of No. 8 Loyola Marymount (0-1). The Bruins improved to 11-2 all-time against LMU with their ninth-straight win over the Lions.
Taking the sand for the first time at Mapes Beach were flights 2, 4, and 6ย with the Bruins winning all three pairs. The Bruins sported five brand new pairs for the 2020 season and six with the exhibition pair on court six.
Senior Lily Justine and junior Lea Monkhouseย on court two rallied for a three-set win over LMU'sย Darby Dunn and Megan Rice, 14-21, 21-17, 15-11.
Then sophomore Lindsey Sparks and graduate transfer Jacqueline Quade, playing in her first-ever beach match, rallied to post a three-set win over the Lions' Georgia Fusco and Lacy Haddock, 21-7, 17-21, 16-14. Quadeย provided the match-clinching block on court four.
UCLA led 2-0 as the second wave took to the sand with flights 1, 3, and 5 looking to seal the win. Freshman Rileigh Powers and senior Madi Yeomansย clinched the first dual win of the season on court five with an easy straight-set win over LMU'sย Jessie Prichard and Cassie Chinn, 21-16, 21-6.
Senior Savvy Simo and sophomore Abby Van Winkle posted a hard-fought, straight-set win on court one over the Lions' Reka Orsi Toth and Selina Marolf, 21-18, 24-22.
Freshman Devon Newberry and junior Megan Muret provided the 5-0 sweep when they rallied to post a three-set winย on court three, defeating LMU'sย Emma Doud and Savannah Slattery, 22-24, 21-17, 15-10. The third set was a wild affair with Doud and Slattery scoring the first four points. But the Bruin tandem rallied to tie the score at 4-4 with a couple of aces from Muret. Then Muret scored another four straight points to put the Bruins up 11-6. Muret and Newberry's sideout game went to work and the pair maintained the five-point advantage the rest of the way.
In exhibition play on court six, UCLA's redshirt freshman Jaden Whitmarsh and junior Mac May defeated LMU'sย Sydnie Herrmann and Piper Manross in straight sets, 21-18, 21-17.
UCLA jumped on a flight a few hours after the win, bound to Honolulu, Hawaii, where the Bruins will compete in the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic at Queen's Beach on Feb. 22 and 23. While in Hawaii, the Bruins will face three top 20 teams. The Bruins will open the tournament in pool play with the hosts, No. 5 Hawai'i on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 11:00 a.m. PT and will then face No. 3 LSU at 3:30 p.m. PT. The Bruins will conclude the day with No. 19ย Stanford at 5:00 p.m. PT. Then after all four squads have completed pool play on Saturday, the teams will be seeded and will play in a tournament on Sunday to decide the winner.
