MVB Drops MPSF Decision at Stanford

The No. 7 UCLA men's volleyball team (5-5, 0-2) fell in straight sets at No. 13 Stanford (5-5, 1-2) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) contest played on Saturday night at Stanford. Scores of the match were 17-25, 19-25, 17-25. UCLA will return to action next Friday at No. 14 Concordia before hosting USC on Sunday in Pauley Pavilion at 5 p.m.
 
In set one, UCLA opened up a 4-2 lead. Stanford then ran off three straight to take a 4-5 advantage. UCLA moved in front 6-5 on an ace from Austin Matautia. The Cardinal then recorded the next three points to go ahead 6-8. The Cardinal upped the margin to 9-13 after an ace and then 11-16 after the Bruins were called for being in the net. UCLA closed to 13-17 on a kill by Daenan Gyimah and then 14-18 on a swing by Mads Kyed Jensen, but Stanford pulled away for a 17-25 win. The Bruins managed a .100 hitting percentage, while the Cardinal hit at a .857 clip with no errors.
 
UCLA streaked to a 7-2 lead to begin set two with Ian Eschenberg supplying a couple of kills and Gyimah registering an ace. However, Stanford answered with six of the next seven points to even the score. With the score tied at 11, Stanford tallied four of the next five points to move to a 12-15 advantage. UCLA trailed 16-19 after a Cardinal service error, but Stanford registered five of the next six points to take a 17-24 lead. The Bruins fought off a couple of set points but fell 19-25.
 
The teams were tied at points six through 14 in set three. Stanford ran off three in a row to open up a 14-17 edge. UCLA closed to 16-18 and 17-19 after a couple of kills from Cole Ketrzynski. The Cardinal then streaked to the end by scoring the final six points of the frame for a 17-25 win.
 
Ketrzynski led UCLA with eight kills (.250) while Gyimah added six kills (.444), two blocks and an ace. Stanford outhit the Bruins .242 to .565, with just four errors for the night. The Cardinal also had the edge in aces, 6 – 4, and in total blocks 6.5 – 3.0.
