No. 10 UCLA Wins Overtime Thriller at California

BERKELEY, CALIF. – The No. 10 UCLA women's basketball team won a thrilling overtime game over California at Haas Pavilion, taking a 74-70 win. Junior Michaela Onyenwere broke a 70-70 deadlock with a turnoaround jumper at the 25.7 mark in OT, a shot that would prove to be the game-winner in Berkeley. The Bruins improved to 21-2 (10-2) on the year, while Cal fell to 9-14 (1-11).
Onyenwere was the game's leading scorer with 21 points on the afternoon, her 11th 20+ point performance of the year. Freshman Charisma Osborne notched 17 points, four rebounds, and two assists on the night. Natalie Chou added 12 points in the win.
The Golden Bears had four players in double figures today, including Jaelyn Brown, who put up 17 points and eight rebounds. Center CJ West was also impressive, notching 11 points and 12 rebounds to help the Bears to 55 total rebounds.
The Bruins opened the first quarter strong, as junior Natalie Chou drained a three-ball on UCLA's first possession and Onyenwere followed with a strong drive for the three-point play. The Golden Bears cut the lead to one (8-7) at the 6:43 mark, but Chou answered with another 3-pointer to extend the lead back to four. After the teams exchanged baskets, freshman Jaden Owens joined the party with a banked 3-pointer to beat the shot clock buzzer, giving UCLA a 17-11 lead at the first media stoppage (3:19). The Bruins stayed hot from deep, as Osborne connected to extend the lead to nine. The Bears would tack on a couple free throws and UCLA took a 22-14 lead into the second quarter. The Bruins drained five threes in the first quarter with Chou and Owens each knocking down a pair of long balls.
Cal scored first in the second quarter, but Osborne answered right back with five-straight points to give UCLA its largest lead of the afternoon at 27-16 (6:54). The Bears cut into the deficit with 3-pointers from Jaelyn Brown and Sara Anastasieska, but the lead moved back to 10 when Dean found Camryn Brown in transition for the driving lay-up at the 4:28 mark (32-22). Sophomore Kiara Jefferson drained a mid-range jumper and Osborne followed with a tough driving lay-in to extend the lead back to seven (1:09). The Bears added a bucket and a free throw to end the half, giving UCLA a 36-32 lead at the break. Osborne as terrific in the first half, notching 13 points, two rebounds, and two assists in the opening 20 minutes.
After a slow start to the quarter, Onyenwere hit a pair of free throws to put the Bruins up 40-35 at the 7:17 mark in the third quarter. UCLA stayed cold and the Bears would rattle off six-straight to take a one-point lead (43-42) with 2:56 to play in the frame. The teams would exchange baskets in several fast-paced ensuing possessions, but Onyenwere took matters into her own hands and drained three-straight baskets in the lane to put UCLA up 52-47 at the end of the third. Onyenwere had eight points and two rebounds in the frame.
The Bruins stayed hot to start the fourth quarter, opening the final frame on a quick 5-2 run to make it a seven-point game. Cal wouldn't go away quietly, cutting UCLA's lead to 61-59 after driving buckets from Anastasieska and Cailyn Crocker. Osborne answered, taking a quick inbound pass from Dean to catch the Bears sleeping and secure the easy two (63-59). Cal came right back scoring the next four points to tie game at 63 (1:30). The Bruins had several chances to score in the final moments, but couldn't convert and the game went to overtime with the teams tied at 63.
Leilani McIntosh scored first for the Bears in OT, but Onyenwere responded with four-straight points to give UCLA a two-point lead with 2:59 to play. Later, Osborne added a pair of free throws, but Jaelyn Brown answered with a 3-pointer to tie the game with just under a minute to play (70-70). Onyenwere responded with a clutch turnaround jumper with 25.7 left to give UCLA the advantage, and the team forced a stop at the other end to take possession with 16.0 to play. Dean drained a pair of free throws and iced the game away, giving UCLA the 74-70 victory.
