No. 7 UCLA Falls to No. 3 Oregon at Pauley

February 14, 2020 | Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELES – The No. 7 UCLA women's basketball team fell to 21-3 (10-3) in an 80-66 loss to the third-ranked Oregon Ducks (23-2, 12-1) Friday evening at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. The Bruins trailed by as many as 26 points in the contest and couldn't overcome the early hole, despite outscoring the Ducks 38-32 in the second half and cutting the lead to 10 in the fourth quarter.

Michaela Onyenwere registered her third-straight 20+ point performance with 23 points tonight, adding six rebounds in the performance. Japreece Dean notched 14 points and is now six points away from 1,000 for her career with the Bruins.

Oregon benefited from a terrific night from senior forward Ruthy Hebard, who notched 30 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Ducks in both categories. Senior guard Sabrina Ionescu was an all-around facilitator for the Ducks and put up 18 points, eight assists, and seven rebounds.

The Bruins got off to a slow start in the first quarter and fell behind 7-0 after the first four minutes of action. Michaela Onyenwere got UCLA on the board with a driving layup (6:18), but Hebard answered right back with a bucket in the paint for the Ducks. Down 13-4 after the first media timeout, Chatel Horvat pulled down a tough offensive board and converted a pair of free throws after getting fouled (13-6). Oregon continued to attack and picked up the pace, going on a quick 9-2 run to take a 22-8 lead into the second quarter. UCLA shot just 2-for-17 from the field in the first.

Onyenwere got UCLA on the board first in the second quarter, converting her patented turnaround jumper in the lane for her second bucket of the game. Dean followed with a clean three-pointer, the Ducks responded with buckets on four-straight possessions to secure a 32-14 lead with 7:17 left in the half. Consecutive baskets from Onyenwere and Osborne cut the lead to 14, but Ionescu continued to attack the pick and roll and found Hebard for an easy lay-in (4:47). The teams exchanged baskets before Horvat snagged a deflected pass under the rim for the easy two, but Jaz Shelley answered right back with a long ball for Oregon (46-26).  Dean and Ionescu both knocked down baskets to end the half, with the Ducks holding a 48-28 advantage.

The Bruins couldn't get much going offensively to open the third quarter and had trouble stopping Hebard, whose four buckets in the opening minutes helped Oregon extend its lead to 60-34 at the 4:36 mark. The Bruins showed some fight with five-straight points, but the run was answered with three-straight buckets from the Ducks. Natalie Chou and Osborne hit free throws at the end of the half to cut the deficit to 67-48.

UCLA extended the run to start the fourth with six-straight points, including a strong driving lay-in from Osborne. Down 69-55 with 6:31 to play, the Bruins couldn't convert some good looks and Erin Boley drained a three to make it a 17-point lead. Onyenwere responded with two-straight buckets and UCLA cut the lead back to 74-62, forcing a timeout from Oregon head coach Kelly Graves with 3:32 to play.  A layup from Chou would make it a 10-point game, but a pair of buckets from Satou Sabally would ice the win away for Oregon with a final score of 80-66.
