Dean Makes History as No. 8 UCLA Downs No. 15 Oregon State

February 17, 2020 | Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELES – The No. 8 UCLA women's basketball team improved to 22-3 (11-3) with an overtime victory against No. 15 Oregon State (19-7, 7-7), the third OT victory for the Bruins this season.

Senior Japreece Dean and freshman Charisma Osborne tied for game-highs with 22 points each, with both guards coming away with memorable nights. Dean reached 1,000 points for her career with UCLA and notched a career-best 12 assists tonight, while Osborne totaled a career-high 22 points.

The Beavers were led by standout guards Destiny Slocum and Mikayla Pivec, who each provided 19 points in the loss. Pivec added nine rebounds in the performance.

After a slow shooting start from both teams, the Bruins took their first lead of the evening at the 6:57 mark with a three-pointer from Dean (5-2). After a quick 7-2 run from the Beavers, Dean answered with a short jumper from the right corner, moving her to 999-career points. The Bruins would tie the game at 11 (1:45) on a fast-break layup from Onyenwere, but Mikayla Pivec answered at the other end with a converted and-one lay-in. Down two, Onyenwere closed the quarter with consecutive buckets, including an easy two following a backcourt steal from Osborne. The Bruins would take a 16-14 lead into the second quarter.

Dean made history to start the second, grabbing a steal and taking it the length of the floor for the bucket to reach 1,000 points in her UCLA career and give the Bruins an 18-14 lead (9:45). The Beavers answered with a 14-1 spurt, as Dean's lay-up was the only UCLA basket until the 2:02 mark. Osborne ended the shooting slump with her first 3-pointer of the evening, cutting the deficit to 28-22. The teams exchanged buckets before Chantel Horvat ended the half with a half-hook in the paint, solidifying the 31-25 lead for OSU. Dean and Onyenwere each contributed eight points in the first half for the Bruins, while Oregon State was led by Pivec and Slocum, who both reached double figures in the first half.

After both teams opened the half with baskets, the Beavers took their largest lead of the night (43-31) on a converted four-point play from Kat Tudor at the 7:57 mark. The Beavers tacked on another basket before Osborne and Dean stopped the bleeding with consecutive buckets, bringing the score back to 45-35 (5:44). Later, the Bruins found themselves down nine before Osborne drained a 3-pointer from the elbow extended and Horvat knocked down a pair of free throws, cutting OSU's lead to four (0:32). The teams would exchange long balls through the end of the quarter, giving the Beavers a three-point lead heading into the fourth (56-53). Osborne was perfect from the field in the third quarter and tallied nine points in the frame.

With the Bruins down two, Dean found Horvat on a beautiful entry pass to the paint and the Australian converted for the bucket (58-58). The Beavers continued to answer throughout the next several minutes, securing a two-point lead (64-62) at the 4:25 media timeout. Down three, Kiara Jefferson came up huge with five-straight points to give the Bruins the lead with 2:48 to play, but Maddie Washington answered with two on the other end for the Beavers to tie the game at 67. The Bruins secured the final possession of regulation, but Dean's floater rattled off the rim at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.

Lauryn Miller opened the OT scoring with a short jumper to give UCLA the lead. The Bruins would then score the next nine points to take command, capped by Osborne's fourth three-pointer of the night. Dean put the exclamation on her historic night with a long ball from the top of the key with nine seconds left, and UCLA would go on to win, 83-74.
