Four Bruins Earn All-MPSF MVB Honors
April 02, 2020 | Men's Volleyball
Four Bruins earned all-league honors as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) announced its men's volleyball awards, as selected by the league's coaches, on Thursday. Senior middle blocker Daenan Gyimah and freshman outside hitter/opposite Cole Ketrzynski were named to the first- and second-teams, respectively. Senior outside hitter Austin Matautia and freshman setter/opposite Mads Kyed Jensen were honorable mention selections. Kyed Jensen joined Ketrzynski on the MPSF All-Freshman team.
Gyimah, who ranked sixth in the NCAA in hitting percentage (.492) in 2020, marked his third straight season as a first-team all-league performer. He led all men's volleyball middle attackers with a 2.98 kills per set average this year. Gyimah ranks as UCLA's all-time career leader in hitting percentage at .483 and is listed fourth in all-time total blocks (431) and sixth in aces (96). This past season, he had double-digit kills in 10 matches, with a season-high of 16 against UC San Diego (h), while hitting at least .400 in 11 matches.
Ketrzynski's total of 17 kills in four different matches (Princeton, Ohio State, Long Beach State, Concordia) in 2020 was the most by a Bruin freshman since Micah Ma'a in 2016 (18 kills in a match vs. Hawai'i). His .296 hitting percentage on the season rated as the second-best nationally among true freshman performers, while his 3.0 kills per set average ranked ninth on the national freshman list.
Matautia, who rates as one of the league's top passers, started all 19 matches and posted a season-best 11 kills versus Princeton. He registered multiple aces in nine matches, with a season-best of four at George Mason. Matautia also had multiple total blocks in nine matches and recorded a season-high seven digs in a win against Ohio State. His aces per set average of 0.41 in 2020 rated among the leaders in the MPSF and was 22nd nationally.
Kyed Jensen led all of the nation's setters in ace average with a 0.60 mark which ranks as the second-highest season average in school history. The 0.60 aces per set average rated as the third-best in the nation in 2020 and his total of 42 aces ranked second in the nation. Both his ace average and total aces count were the highest in the nation this season by a freshman. He helped set the Bruins to a .302 team hitting percentage which was tied for the eighth-best in the NCAA.
