Five Beach Bruins Named to Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll

SAN FRANCISCO – Five members of the UCLA beach volleyball team were named to the Pac-12 Spring Academic Honor Roll, the conference announced Monday.
Senior Lily Justine, juniors Lea Monkhouse and Megan Muret, sophomore Abby Van Winkle and redshirt freshman Piper Monk-Heidrich earned the first Pac-12 All-Academic selections of their careers. Any student-athlete on his or her respective team roster with a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or above, and who has served at least one year in residence at the institution, is eligible for recognition.
Justine (physiological science) ended the season with an overall record of 10-4 and her career with a mark of 87-31. She partnered with Monkhouse for the entire season and was 9-3 on court three and 1-1 on court two. The Bruins faced 11 ranked opponents in the 15 duals in the shortened season with Justine going 7-4 against ranked teams. She recorded a season-best winning streak of three consecutive duals twice during the year. The duo also clinched three victories in dual matches on the year for the Bruins.
Monkhouse (communications) ended the season with an overall record of 10-4 and a career mark of 66-15. She partnered with Justine for the entire season and was 9-3 on court three and 1-1 on court two. The Bruins faced 11 ranked opponents in the 15 duals in the shortened season with Monkhouse going 7-4 against ranked teams. She recorded a season-best winning streak of three consecutive duals twice during the year. The duo also clinched three victories in dual matches on the year for the Bruins.
Muret (economics) ended the season with an overall record of 11-3 and a career mark of 54-11. She partnered with Mac May for six of the last eight duals, going 5-1, all on court five. Muret also went 3-2 with Devon Newberry (2-0 on court five, 1-0 on court three and 0-2 on court four), 2-0 on court five with Madi Yeomans, and 1-0 with Jacqueline Quade on court five. The Bruins faced 11 ranked opponents in the 15 duals in the shortened season with Muret going 7-3 against ranked teams. She recorded a season-best winning streak of five consecutive duals twice, the latter of which began on Mar. 7 and was still alive when the season ended. Muret and May clinched three victories in dual matches on the year for the Bruins, two of which were against USC (Mar. 7 and Mar. 11).
Van Winkle (psychology) ended the season with an overall record of 13-2 and a career record of 42-7. She partnered with senior Savvy Simo for the entire 2020 season, all on court one. The duo helped the top-ranked Bruins to a 5-1 weekend at the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic and was named the Pac-12 Pair of the Week (Feb. 25), with all five wins coming against ranked teams before closing out the opening weekend with a hard-fought 3-2 decision against then-No. 3 LSU. Van Winkle and Simo took down 2019 first team AVCA All-Americans Claire Coppola and Kristen Nuss from LSU in straight sets in the first meeting but lost in three sets the second time around. The duo was named Pac-12 Pair of the Week for the second time on Mar. 10 after helping the second-ranked Bruins to a 4-0 weekend at the Pac-12 South Tournament which included wins over two ranked opponents as UCLA defeated Oregon, Washington, No. 5 USC, and No. 19 Arizona State. The pair won all four matches in straight sets at the tournament, allowing only one opponent to score more than 16 points in just one of the eight sets as their wins on court one clinched the team dual victory over ASU (Mar. 7) and Oregon (Mar. 8). The duo also went 9-2 against ranked teams on the year and recorded a season-best winning streak of six consecutive duals which was still alive at the end of the season.
Monk-Heidrich (English) was on the team but didn't see any action in 2020 after redshirting the 2019 season.
