July 16, 2020 | Track & Field
LOS ANGELES – The United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced today its academic awards for the 2020 indoor track season, with eight Bruins earning individual honors and the UCLA men's and women's squads securing All-Academic Team acclaim.
Individual Honorees
Student-athletes need to have completed at least three quarters (or two semesters) at their respective institution and boast a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 to qualify for individual USTFCCCA All-Academic distinction. Additionally, prospective nominees must have finished the indoor season ranked in the top 96 in any championship individual event, or in the top 48 in any championship relay event.
Rice finished the year with the No. 35 5000m time in the nation, as she clocked a school record 16:12.16 at the MPSF Championships. Burke put together an impressive senior indoor campaign that saw him register the second-best 5000m time (13:47.78) and fifth-best 3000m performance in UCLA indoor history. Morzenti earned his nomination with a personal-best mile time of 4:02.15 and participation on UCLA's seventh-ranked DMR squad. Kelly was also a member of that DMR team and was No. 30 in the country in the 800m (1:49.25).
Lee and Wilson comprise the Bruins' field representatives on the All-Academic list. Lee cleared 2.18m (7-01.75) at the New Mexico Team Open (No. 35 in NCAA) while Wilson's shot put mark of 18.34m (60-02.00) at MPSFs was good for the 54th-best throw in the country.
Okoro and Pierre-Webster both qualified for their academic work and prowess in the sprints. Okoro already boasts the fourth-best times in the 60m (7.42) and 200m (23.83) in UCLA indoor history while Pierre-Webster was a member of the Bruin women's record-breaking 4x400m relay squad this past indoor season.
