SAN FRANCISCO – Abbey Forbes of the UCLA women's tennis team was named Pac-12 Player of the Week for April 5-11, the conference announced Monday.
Forbes went 4-0 across her singles and doubles matches as the Bruins emphatically claimed the first outright Pac-12 regular-season championship in program history with 7-0 wins against both Stanford and California.
Forbes knocked off a pair of top-50 singles opponents, dealing No. 48 Michaela Gordon of the Cardinal (6-2, 6-4) and No. 41 Haley Giavara of the Golden Bears (6-2, 6-0) straight-set losses. She is now 12-1 versus nationally-ranked singles opponents and 15-1 overall. In doubles play, Forbes and Jada Hart improved their record to 7-1 with triumphs over Gordon/Niluka Madurawe of Stanford (6-2) and Giavara/Valentina Ivanov of Cal (6-1). Each of the resounding victories came on the top court.
The Pac-12 Player of the Week award marks the fourth for UCLA women's tennis in 2021. No other program has earned more than two. Forbes, who has been honored on three occasions during her career, is the only two-time recipient this season. With the latest selections of Forbes (April 12, March 16), Hart (Feb. 11) and Elysia Bolton (Feb. 4), the UCLA women's tennis program has garnered 34 total Pac-12 Player of the Week awards.
ALSO NOMINATED: Domenika Turkovic, ASU; Nika Zupancic, WASH; Savanna Ly-Nguyen, WSU.
