SAN FRANCISCO – For the second time in as many weeks, and third time this season, Abbey Forbes of the UCLA women's tennis team was named Pac-12 Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday.
Forbes, who was honored for April 12-18, earned two singles wins and prevailed in her only finished doubles match as the Bruins completed their regular season with home victories over No. 6/4 Pepperdine and No. 36/32 USC.
For the first time this year, she needed to rally, overcoming the nation's former top-ranked player, Ashley Lahey of the Waves, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Forbes also knocked off No. 65 Salma Ewing of the Trojans, 6-2, 6-3, to collect her first clinching point of the campaign. She has finished first or second in 13 of her 17 singles wins. Playing on the third doubles court, Forbes and Vanessa Ong started the crosstown rivalry match with a 6-1 showing against Summer Dvorak and Danielle Willson.
Not only did UCLA complete a perfect run through the Pac-12 schedule, but so did Forbes, who went 9-0 against conference singles foes while playing exclusively on the top court. Overall, she has a 17-1 singles record and a 9-1 doubles mark.
No other conference player was recognized more than once on the campaign. As a program, UCLA garnered five selections. In addition to Forbes' three (March 16, April 12, April 20), Elysia Bolton (Feb. 4) and Jada Hart (Feb. 11) picked up one apiece. UCLA women's tennis has totaled 35 all-time awards.
ALSO NOMINATED: Lauryn John-Baptiste, ASU; Maria Campos, COLO; Nika Zupancic, WASH.
