Jessie Fleming's 75th minute penalty kick sent Canada to the gold medal match, as the Canadians defeated the United States, 1-0, in the semifinal. Canada was awarded a penalty kick after a VAR review determined that Deanne Rose was fouled in the box. Handed the ball by team captain Christine Sinclair, Fleming confidently sent her kick to the far right corner to beat USA goalkeeper AD Franch, who had entered the game in the first half after an injury to starter Alyssa Naeher. In the quarterfinal shootout win over Brazil, Fleming put Canada on the board with a make in the second round. The victory was Canada's first over the United States in over 20 years. Sam Mewis was the only Bruin to see action on the U.S. side, playing the final 10 minutes.
Teagan Micah attempted to join her classmate Fleming in the gold medal match. After a scoreless first half, during which an apparent goal by Australia's Sam Kerr was called off due to a foul, Sweden scored less than a minute into the second half. Micah had made a save on a long-range deflected shot, but Sweden's Fridolina Rolfo pounced on the rebound and shot past Micah for the 1-0 lead. The one goal held up and sent the unbeaten Swedes to the final against Canada. Australia will play the U.S. for bronze on Aug. 5 at 1:00 a.m. PT.
Fleming, who was part of Canada's 2016 bronze medal-winning team, is guaranteed a second Olympic medal when she plays in the gold medal match on Aug. 6 (Aug. 5 at 7:00 p.m. PT in Los Angeles).
Men's Water Polo
Team USA dropped its third straight match at the Tokyo Olympic Games on Monday, falling to Greece 14-5 as they concluded Group A play with a 2-3 record. The Americans advanced to the quarterfinal round where they'll meet Spain on Wednesday, August 4 at 2:00 p.m. local time, 10:00 p.m. PDT on Tuesday, August 2. Spain went 5-0 to finish first in Group B action. The match is slated to air live on CNBC and stream live on the NBC Sports app.
Irving was in the starting lineup for the fifth straight game against Greece and registered one goal and one field block in just over 24 minutes of playing time. Reserve goalkeeper Alex Wolf did not play.
Baseball
Israel (Zack Weiss) and Team USA (Eric Filia) both dropped contests on Monday, but remain alive in the Olympic baseball tournament.
Israel fell 11-1 to Korea, and Weiss did not appear out of the bullpen. He was the winning pitcher on Sunday as Israel recorded its first-ever Olympics victory, and he has totaled four innings so far during the Olympics.
Team USA meanwhile dropped a 10-inning heartbreaker to Japan, by a score of 7-6. Japan plated one run in the bottom of the ninth to send it to extras, then brought in the walk-off run in the next frame. Filia started in right field and batted sixth, going 1-3 with a run scored. He doubled in the second inning, then later scored after reaching on a HBP as part of a three-run fourth for the United States.
Next up, Israel faces the Dominican Republic in the repechage phase, with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 a.m. PT on Tuesday. The winner of that contest faces Team USA at 8:00 p.m. PT on Tuesday, with a spot in the semifinals on the line.
Women's Basketball
Atonye Nyingifa scored eight points and led Nigeria with eight assists in the team's 103-82 loss to Japan on Sunday evening in Tokyo. Nigeria did not advance to the quarterfinals after going 0-3 in the group stage. Nyingifa finished her first Olympic Games with averages of 7.0 points, 4.0 assists, and 4.0 rebounds per contest.
Nirra Fields and Canada did not advance to the Olympic quarterfinals after finishing 1-2 in the group stage. Fields scored in double figures with 11.3 points per game in her second Olympics.
Angela Dugalic will represent UCLA Women's Basketball in the Olympic quarterfinals as Serbia takes on China in the last eight. The game is scheduled to tip at 6:00 p.m. PT on Tuesday, Aug. 3.
Track & Field
Meleni Rodney is set to make her Olympic debut in round one of the women's 400m. She is scheduled to toe the line in heat two of prelims at 5:53 p.m. PT on Monday evening. The first three athletes in each of the six heats and then next six fastest runners will advance to the semifinal heats.
