UCLA Offense Explodes in 4-1 Win at Oregon State

October 15, 2021 | Women's Soccer

Corvallis, Ore. - In a battle of two Top 25 teams, No. 7 UCLA used a dominating first half performance to come away with an impressive 4-0 victory at No. 24 Oregon State.

The Bruins (12-0-2, 4-0-2) scored in the 10th minute and then recorded two rebound goals within three minutes to take a 3-0 lead after half an hour.

As they have often done this season, UCLA got off to another hot start, taking an early 1-0 lead after nine minutes when Olivia Athens headed in a Marley Canales cross in front of goal. Quincy McMahon was also credited with the assist, giving her four straight games with an assist.

An opportunistic sub paid dividends for the Bruins in the 28th minute. Just one minute after entering the game, defender Brianne Riley pounced on a shot by Athens that was saved by Oregon State goalkeeper Bridgette Skiba. Riley put the rebound into the back of the net for her first career goal to double UCLA's lead.

Three minutes later, UCLA capitalized on another rebound. Reilyn Turner collected a Canales free kick and sent a perfect header to Maricarmen Reyes on the right side. Reyes' shot was saved by Skiba, but Turner headed the rebound over the head of the last Beaver defending the goal line for her eighth goal of the season.

The Bruins took a 3-0 lead into halftime and added to it in the 55th minute when Reale stole the ball from an Oregon State defender in the box and sent a left-footed shot past Skiba to the right post. The goal was the freshman's first career goal and tied the Bruins' season-high for goals scored in a game.

UCLA, who lost the shutout bid in the 89th minute on a goal by McKenna Martinez, outshot Oregon State 16-4 in the game, with Bruin goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy making two saves. Skiba had nine saves for the Beavers, including eight in the first half.

The Bruins will head back on the road next week to play at Washington on Thursday, Oct. 21.
