Seniors Lead No. 1 UCLA to Win Over No. 9 Pepperdine

LOS ANGELES -- No. 1 UCLA (16-1, 1-0 MPSF) continued its dominance over the Golden Coast Conference with an 18-10 home win over No. 9 Pepperdine (13-9, 1-1 GCC), on Sunday afternoon at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center. The win was UCLA's 29th-consecutive victory over the GCC, dating back to 2017. With the win over the Waves, UCLA improved to 83-31-1 in the series history.The win concluded UCLA's non-conference slate and was "Senior Day" marking the Bruins' final regular season home game (UCLA is slated to host the NCAA Championship Dec. 2-5). The Bruin seniors played a major role in today's victory, having a hand in 15 of the 18 goals UCLA scored.
Graduate Chasen Travisano had a game-high and personal-best five goals on five shots while graduate Nicolas Saveljic tallied a game-high seven points (two goals and five assists) to pace the Bruins' offensive attack. Senior Jake Cavano also had a hat trick against the Waves. All five seniors that played scored at least one goal as redshirt seniors Evan Rosenfeld and Felix Brozyna-Vilim had one goal apiece. Junior Bernardo Maurizi got the start in the cage and went the distance, registering seven saves.
PERIOD ONE
> UCLA put six goals up on the scoreboard in the first period, leading 6-4 heading into the second frame.
> Cavano (4:18 and 0:40) and Travisano (6:58 and 3:30) each scored two goals in the first quarter for the Bruins.
> Sophomore Tanner Pulice (5:25) and Saveljic (1:41) each contributed one goal in the opening frame.
PERIOD TWO
> The two teams battled to a 4-4 tied in the second quarter with UCLA holding a 10-8 lead at the break.
> Junior Cameron Reagan (7:36) scored the first goal of the period to give UCLA a 7-4 lead.
> Pepperdine would score the next three goals to tie it at 7-7.
> But the Bruins answered with three straight goals, which began with the first score by redshirt freshman Gianpiero Di Martire (2:07).
> Saveljic netted his second (1:20) and Travisano completed his hat trick (0:51) to push the lead to 10-7.
PERIOD THREE
> UCLA dominated the third period, outscoring the Waves 4-1 to take a commanding 14-9 lead into the fourth quarter.
> Travisano opened the scoring in the period with his fourth goal of the game on a power play (4:58) and the Cavano completed his hat trick (4:09) on a power play.
> Di Martire netted his second of the game (3:26) from the front court to give UCLA another 3-0 scoring run.
> Travisano's fifth of the game (0:59) would end the scoring in the third period.
PERIOD FOUR
> The Bruins won the fourth quarter, 4-1, to provide the 18-10 final.
> Rosenfeld opened the scoring in the final stanza (7:19) and it was followed by a goal from junior Tommy Gruwell (5:12).
> After a goal from Pepperdine's Sean Ferrari (4:48), Reagan added his second of the game (4:07) and Brozyna-Vilim scored his first from two meters (2:01) off a nice feed from redshirt sophomore Jack Larsen to end the scoring.
UP NEXT
The Bruins have a week off before traveling to USC for an MPSF game to be televised on the Pac-12 Networks. The game time will be announced next week for the match against the Trojans, slated for Saturday, Nov. 6.
