Bruins, Cougars Battle to 1-1 Tie

October 24, 2021 | Women's Soccer

Pullman, Wash. โ€“ No. 8 UCLA scored another early goal but gave up a second-half equalizer in a hard-fought 1-1 tie at Washington State.

The Bruins struck first in the 15th minute, as a goal kick was won by Mia Fishel and set down for Kennedy Faulknor. The redshirt senior settled with her right and bombed a left-footed shot that beat Washington State goalkeeper Nadia Cooper, who entered the game leading the nation in save percentage. The goal was Faulknor's third of the season.

Faulknor nearly made it 2-0 in the 55th minute, but her shot hit the crossbar. Those inches made a huge difference in the game, as just 22 seconds later, the Cougars tied it up with a long-distance strike by Sydney Studer.

Washington State (10-2-4, 4-1-3 in the Pac-12) had an opportunity to go ahead in the 62nd minute when Grayson Lynch's far post shot beat Lauren Brzykcy, but it clanged off the post, and Brzykcy secured the rebound for the save. Reilyn Turner had a chance at the go-ahead goal in the 71st minute with a one-timer off a great pass from Madelyn Desiano, but Cooper was there to make the save. The Cougars also had a good look at the go-ahead goal in the 87th minute, but Margie Detrizio's shot just missed wide.

Overtime also brought about some great chances for each team. In the 108th minute, Madelyn Desiano fed Turner with a great pass into the box, but Cooper made a kick save to thwart the attack. Brzykcy had her own great kick save in the final minute, coming off the line to stop Elyse Bennett at the top of the box before scrambling back to cover the goal. Bennett sent in two more balls, but they were both cleared out by the Bruin defense.

Brzykcy finished the game with four saves, while Cooper totaled five. UCLA had a slight 16-13 advantage in shots.

The tie keeps UCLA unbeaten with a 13-0-3 overall and 5-0-3 Pac-12 record. The Bruins remain within two points of Pac-12 leader USC but dropped to third, one point behind second-place Stanford. UCLA will host Stanford on Thursday, Oct. 28 at 7pm.
