MVB Adds Four Standout Recruits

November 29, 2021 | Men's Volleyball

UCLA head men's volleyball coach John Speraw and his staff announced the signing of four elite student-athletes on Monday. Joining the Bruins for the 2023 season will be outside hitter Zach Rama, setter Andrew Rowan, middle blocker Christopher Hersh and libero Coleman McDonough.

Rama is a 6-8 outside hitter from Sandra Day O'Connor High School in Phoenix, AZ. He was named the Arizona Player of the Year in 2021. This summer, Rama was named to the 2021 USA Youth National team where he played for UCLA Asst. Coach John Hawks and with fellow UCLA signee Andrew Rowan. Rama is rated as arguably one of the top three players in the class and has elite ability attacking from all areas of the court and the potential to be an impactful blocker at the net. Zach has a bright future for the Bruins and eventually Team USA. Rama plays for AZ Fear Volleyball Club.

Rowan is a 6-6 setter from J Serra High School in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. He was named to the 2021 USA Youth National Team with UCLA Asst. Coach John Hawks and future Bruin Zach Rama. Rowan was also named to the USA Collegiate National Training team as a high school junior. He is widely considered to be the top setter in the class. Andrew owns an infectious personality, superb court leadership and an extraordinary desire to win. Andrew brings with him an elite level jump serve as well as the ability to run a highly creative offense. His future in the sport will go as far as he wants to take it. Rowan plays for OCVC.

McDonough is a 5-11 libero from Seneca Valley Senior High School in Cranberry Township, PA. He has been a four-year varsity starter for Seneca Valley and was named 2021 WPIAL Defensive Player of the Year, All-District 1st Team and earned a spot on the 2021 Pennsylvania All-State Team. McDonough is an outstanding volleyball player with a solid platform, terrific defensive instincts and a motor that is always going. His court presence will be evident from the first day he sets foot on campus. McDonough plays for Vanguard out of Ohio.

Hersh is a 6-9 middle blocker from St. Francis High School in Mountain View, CA. He has been a recent invite to USA NTDP programming. Hersh developed the game late and has quickly emerged as a top prospect in the 2022 class. He is a gifted athlete with a nice arm and the ability to block the ball pin to pin. His size, athleticism and drive will be great assets to the Bruin team. He plays for Bay 2 Bay volleyball club.

"We have really put together another outstanding class," said Coach Speraw. "This is a mature group of men made up of high achievers in the classroom, in the community and on the court. They bring an extremely high level of commitment to the gym and will effortlessly add to the wonderful culture currently at UCLA. We are beyond thrilled to welcome these four young men and their amazing families to UCLA and we will look for them to achieve great things in Westwood!"
