No. 8 UCLA Rolls to 83-56 Defeat of No. 13 Oregon

February 19, 2021 | Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELES – Five Bruins scored in double figures as the No. 8 UCLA women's basketball team rolled to an 83-56 defeat and regular-season sweep of No. 13 Oregon Friday evening at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.

The win marked the third this season over a top-15 team by the Bruins (13-3, 11-3 Pac-12) – and the 20th of head coach Cori Close's tenure at the helm of the program.

Michaela Onyenwere led the balanced UCLA scoring effort with 17 points. Lauryn Miller added a season-high 16. Natalie Chou scored 14 points, while Charisma Osborne contributed 13. Horvat rounded out the quintet of double-digit scorers with 10 points off the bench. The Bruins nearly doubled up the Ducks on the boards, 47-24.

Oregon (12-6, 9-6) was led by Nyara Sabally, who scored 12 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Te-Hina Paopao added 11 points, converting 3-of-5 shots from 3-point range. The teams combined to make 19 shots from distance (UCLA – 10-of-22, Oregon – 9-of-25).

Threes from Chou and Osborne helped the Bruins jump out to a 6-2 lead (7:58). Miller then registered buckets on two-straight possessions to extend the lead to 10-4, but Sabally answered at the other end with a basket inside (6:24). The Bruins stayed hot, as Lindsey Corsaro and Onyenwere both knocked down triples to make it 16-6 with 4:32 to play. The Bruins led 18-8 out the first media timeout before Jaz Shelley and Horvat exchanged three-pointers. Osborne continued UCLA's hot streak with her second long ball of the game, extending the lead to 26-11 (1:11). Osborne would tack on two free throws to give the Bruins a 28-11 lead after one.

Two triples from Te-Hina PaoPao brought the lead back to 30-19, but Onyenwere answered with her own long ball to push the score to 33-19 (8:17). The Bruins continued their balanced attack as Chou and Camryn Brown answered with buckets to extend UCLA's lead to 37-22 at the second quarter media timeout (5:15). Five-straight points from Horvat made it 44-22 before Osborne converted a steal-and-score to make it a 46-22 game at the half.

Onyenwere and Osborne each had 10 in the first 20 minutes, a half that saw eight of UCLA's nine players record points. Paopao notched eight points for the Ducks.

Miller opened the second half with a basket inside, followed by a pair of free throws from Onyenwere (9:07). A transition layup from Osborne made it 52-26, but Sabally answered at the other end with a triple (7:53). The Bruins led 54-34 before Chou knocked down a pair of free throws (4:40). Onyenwere then canned a three and Miller followed with a there-point play, pushing UCLA's lead to 63-38 with 2:19 to play in the third. Oregon would score the final six points of the frame to make it a 63-44 game after three quarters.

A jumper from Onyenwere put the Bruins ahead 66-47 early in the fourth quarter (8:06). Chou added a second-chance layup and a triple to make it 71-47 before an Oregon timeout (6:02). A pair of threes from Taylor Chavez and a layup from Shelley made it 77-55 with 2:59 to play. The Bruins would go on to ice the game away and win by a final score of 83-56.
