STANFORD, Calif. --ย No. 2 UCLA (6-4, 5-4 MPSF) led 13-9 in the third quarter but didn't score again for 14 minutes, and ultimately dropped a heartbreaker to No. 1 California (7-2, 7-2 MPSF) in overtime, 16-15, on Sunday morning at Stanford's Avery Aquatic Center. It was the third time the Bruins fell to the Golden Bears in overtime this season.

Senior Nicolas Saveljicย continued his torrid scoring streak with six goals to lead all playersย in scoring. Freshman Mo Kenney had a hat trick for the Bruins for the second time this season. He has scored in all six games he has played in 2021. Sophomore Bernardo Maurizi earned the start in goal and went the distance, recording 12 saves.

The Bruins led 5-3 at the end of the first period after the Golden Bears scored the first two goals of the game. Kenney scored twice in the period (3:34 and 2:16) while redshirt junior Evan Rosenfeld (5:06), Saveljic (4:29) and sophomore Gabe Discipulo (1:08) each scored once.

UCLA won the second quarter in a high-scoring affair, 6-5. Discipulo scored his second of the game (6:01) while Kenney added his third to complete his hat trick (1:32).ย Saveljic scored four times in the period (7:36, 5:08, 4:15, and 1:02)ย to run his total to fiveย goals. His final goal of the period gave the Bruins an 11-8 lead at the break.

Sophomore Andy Rodgers scored his first of the game to open the scoring in the third period (7:31) and Saveljic tacked on his sixth of the game (6:12) to give UCLA its largest lead of the game at 13-9. But then the goals dried up and the Bruins never scored again until the final seconds of the fourth quarter. California would trim the Bruins' lead to 13-12 by the end of the third quarter.

Cal tied the game at 13-13 with a power play goal (5:51) and then took the lead on another power play goal (0:58). UCLA then put Saveljic in a goalie cap, essentially pulling the goalie to give the Bruins a 7-on-6 opportunity, and junior Jake Cavano capitalized on it, scoring his first goal of the game with just 0:05 left to send the game into overtime, tied 14-14. Jack Deelyย scored his fifth of the game to put Cal in front 15-14 (2:04). It was the only goal of the first overtime period. Redshirt freshman Jack Larsen scored his first of the game (2:36) on a power play to tie the game at 15-15. But Warren Loth scored the game-winning goal (0:44) to provide the 16-15 final.ย

Adrian Weinbergย registered six saves for California, which was led in scoring by Deelyย with the five goals.

The Bruins return to action later today at 3:30 p.m. PT when they take on No. 4ย USC (3-7, 2-7 MPSF) at Stanford's Averyย Aquaticย Center.
