March 17, 2021 | Women's Basketball
LOS ANGELES – Michaela Onyenwere has been named an Associated Press (AP) Third Team All-American, the publication announced Tuesday.
This is the second-straight season Onyenwere has earned AP Third-Team All-America accolades, as she becomes the first Bruin in program history to earn a spot on one of the first three AP All-America teams in two separate seasons. It also the third time in the last four years a Bruin has been named to one of the AP's three All-America teams, as Bruin great Jordin Canada ('18) also took home third-team accolades in 2018. Maylana Martin secured UCLA's only other All-America accolade in 1999 (Third-Team).
The senior has put together an impressive 2020-21 campaign en route to All-America acclaim. The Aurora, Colo., native leads the Bruins with 18.7 points per game and has scored in double figures in all but two of UCLA's contests this year. She has compiled five 20+ point performances, including three games with at least 30 points. She recorded a career-high 33 points in the team's road win over Oregon (Jan. 3), adding 10 rebounds for the double-double. She also had an historic performance in the team's win over USC (Feb. 26), notching 30 points and going a perfect 6-for-6 from distance to help the Bruins to a team-record 16 three-pointers. She also notched All-Pac-12 and Pac-12 All-Tournament honors for the second-straight season.
Onyenwere's prolific scoring over the past several seasons has vaulted her up the Bruins' all-time list. She opened the season with 1,499-career-points after back-to-back 500+ point seasons, taking 19th place on the program's all-time scoring list. Ahead of the NCAA Tournament, she has currently tallied 1,842 points for sixth place. She most recently passed UCLA greats Noelle Quinn ('07 – 1,829 points) and Natalie Williams ('94 -- 1,813 points) in her 30-point performance against Stanford in the Pac-12 Tournament Championship (Mar. 7).
Onyenwere is also a top-five finalist for the Cheryl Miller Award, the award presented annually to the nation's top small forward. She is being considered for the Senior CLASS Award, which recognizes senior student-athletes who use their platforms to enact positive social change.
