TEMPE, Ariz. --ย No. 2ย UCLA (7-2, 5-2ย MPSF) dropped just its second game at No. 5 Arizona State (12-6, 6-3 MPSF) in program history on Saturday afternoon at Mona Plummer Aquatic Center with an 8-6ย loss. The Bruins dropped to 27-2 all-time against the Sun Devils, who beat the Bruins for the first time since 2013.

UCLA wasย led by junior Ava Johnson who had two goals. Redshirt sophomore Georgia Phillips had seven saves while allowing eight goals.

The Bruins didn't win a single quarter but battled to a tie in three of the four frames, but couldn't recover from a disastrous second period in which they were outscored 4-2.

The game was tied 1-1 at the end of the first period after senior Brooke Maxson scored the tying goal (0:53).

UCLA tookย its only lead of the game at 2-1 off a nice shot from Johnson (7:00). But ASU reeled off four unanswered goals, two of which were penalty shots (5:56 and 1:18). Junior Katrina Drake scored the final goal of the second period (1:15) to trim the deficit to 5-3 heading into the break.

Junior Val Ayala opened the scoring in the third period with a power play goal (6:02) to pull UCLA to within one goal at 5-4. But ASU answered with a goal to keep a two-goal lead heading into the fourth period.

Like they did in the third, the Bruins got the first goal of the quarter in the fourth on a strong catch and finish at two meters from Johnson (6:35) to make it 6-5 ASU. Some defensive lapses coupled with a stalled offense from the Bruins allowed the Sun Devils to score back-to-back goals (6:00 and 2:11) and put the game out of reach at 8-5. Sophomore Hannah Palmer scored the final goal of the game (0:39) for the Bruins to provide the 8-6 final.ย

Chelsea Karimazondoย registered eight saves for the Sun Devils, who were led by Bente Rogge'sย hat trick.

UCLAย returns to action tomorrow when the two teams battle each other again at 9:30 a.m.ย PDT.
