MVB Advances to MPSF Semifinals

The No. 2 seeded UCLA men's volleyball team advanced to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) semifinals behind a career-best 24 kills from Cole Ketrzynski in a four-set victory over No. 7 seed Concordia, Irvine on Thursday afternoon in Provo, Utah. Scores of the match were 25-23, 21-25, 26-24, 25-20.
 
Ketrzynski, who hit .476, led a Bruin attack which produced a .425 attack percentage for the match and featured four Bruins in double-digit kills. Alex Knight equaled his career-high with 15 kills while hitting .524. Daniel Matheney also matched his career-best with 10 kills while hitting .750. Kevin Kobrine recorded 10 kills for his fourth straight double-digit kill effort. Sam Kobrine totaled 59 set assists and added a couple of aces.
 
 The Bruins will play No. 3 seed Pepperdine in a semifinal match at 3 p.m. PT/4 p.m. MT on Friday in BYU's Smith Fieldhouse. The Waves defeated Stanford in four sets to advance. Top-seed BYU will meet No. 4 seed Grand Canyon, which defeated USC in four sets, in the second semifinal contest. The MPSF Championship match is set for Saturday night at 6 p.m. PT/7 p.m. MT. The winner will earn an automatic bid to the seven team National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Championship which starts May 3 in Columbus, Ohio.
 
UCLA opened set one by taking a 5-2 lead on a Ketrzynski swing. Concordia rallied to gain the lead at 7-9. A Knight kill put UCLA in front 15-14. The lead see-sawed back-and-forth from there. A Ketrzynski kill handed the Bruins a 20-19 edge. Two kills by Knight pushed the lead to 23-21. Daniel Matheney's spike made it 24-22. The Bruins captured the set after an Eagle service error for a 25-23 win.
 
UCLA moved out to a 4-2 advantage early in set two. CUI battled back to go up 10-12. UCLA evened the score at 15-all after a Sam Kobrine ace. However, four of the next five points went to the Eagles. UCLA closed to within 20-23 after a service error, but Concordia held on for a 21-25 win. Ketrzynski totaled 8 kills in the set.
 
In set three, UCLA grabbed a 9-6 lead after another Sam Kobrine ace. A Kevin Kobrine swing grew the difference to 13-9. The Bruins enjoyed a 17-11 margin following a series of Eagle errors. Concordia used a strong service run to help come back to tie the score at 19-all. UCLA led 23-22 after a Kevin Kobrine ace, but the Eagles tallied the next two points for a look at set point. Swings by Ketrzynski and Knight turned the tables and pushed the Bruins to a 26-24 win.
 
UCLA went down 7-9 in set four. A Ketrzynski kill leveled the score at 11-all. An Adam Parks/Ketrzynski/Kevin Kobrine block put UCLA in front 16-15. With the score even at 17-all, the Bruins ran off five straight points and took control of the set at 22-17 after Ketrzynski's serve rolled over the net for a point. Kills by Knight and Kevin Kobrine finished off the set for a 25-20 decision.
