
No. 3 UCLA Surges Past No. 17 San Jose State, 17-11

SAN JOSE, Calif. --ย No. 3 UCLA (7-1, 5-1 MPSF) shook off a slow start and surged past No. 17ย San Jose State (1-9, 0-6ย MPSF) on Sunday for a 17-11 victory at SRAC Pool.ย The Bruins improvedย to 39-0 all-time against the Spartans.
The Bruins were led by sophomore Hannah Palmer, junior Ava Johnson, and freshman Malia Allen, who all scored four goals in the win over the Spartans.ย Senior Jahmea Bent got the start in the cage and recorded seven saves whileย allowing 11ย goals.
The Bruins trailed 4-3 at the end of the first period. UCLA received one goal each from senior Lexi Liebowitz (7:41), Allen (5:54), and junior Val Ayala (0:31).
UCLA won the second quarter 3-2 to tie the game at 6-6ย headingย into the break. Scoring in the period for the Bruins was Palmer, who scored twice on penalty shots (7:38 and 3:38) and Allen (2:57).
The Bruins took control in the second half, outscoring the Spartans 11-5, including by a count of 6-2 in the third period. UCLA opened the third period with three straight goals, including a power play goal that completed a hat trick for Palmer (7:28) and another power play goal for senior Myna Simmons' only score of the game (6:37). Johnson netted her second of the game from two meters (6:04) to put UCLA up 9-6. After a goal by the Spartans, Palmer tacked on her fourth (5:04) and Allen completed her hat trick (4:14) to extend the lead to 11-7. SJSU would score again (3:50), but Liebowitz would find the back of the net for her second score (2:54) to end the scoring in the third with UCLA leading 12-8.
UCLA dominated in the final period as well, winning it 5-3ย to provide the 17-11 final. After Allen scored her fourth of the game from the front court (6:40), Johnson reeled off three-straight scores for the Bruins' offense (4:55, 3:51, and 2:53) to put UCLA in front 16-11. Ayala ended the scoring with her second goalย of the game (1:56).
Hannah Henry registered eight saves for the Spartans, who were led by Olga Descalzi Portell's sixย scores.
UCLAย returns to action on Saturday, April 10 when they visit No. 4 Arizona State. The game is slated to start at 11:30 a.m.ย PDT.
