Kobrine Brothers Take Home MVB Weekly Honors
April 05, 2021 | Men's Volleyball
UCLA men's volleyball's Kobrine brothers were the recipients of weekly awards after their outstanding play in a pair of wins at No. 9 Grand Canyon this past weekend. Redshirt senior setter Sam Kobrine was named Off the Block's National Setter of the Week. Redshirt sophomore opposite / hitter Kevin Kobrine earned Molten/Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Sam had 48 set assists while guiding the Bruin offense to a .435 attack percentage in a five-set win reverse sweep over GCU on Friday night. It marked the sixth match in the last eight contests in which Kobrine had helped set the Bruin attack to a percentage of at least .350. He came back on Saturday to direct the Bruins to a 3-1 win over the Antelopes. In both contests, he topped the UCLA team in digs with 7 and 9, respectively.
Kevin entered both matches last week off the bench to help spark the Bruin outside attack. Kobrine hit a combined .629 for the two matches and averaged 3.4 kills/set. He connected for a career-best 16 kills on 20 swings, with no errors, while hitting .800 to help UCLA complete a 3-2 win in the first match. In the second battle, he came off the bench to ignite a Bruin rally from a 12-19 deficit to claim the second set 29-27. Kobrine added a career-best four aces in that contest. His 18.0-point performance in match one of the week also represented a career-high total.
The Bruins return to the court on Friday and Saturday for MPSF matches against No. 2-ranked BYU in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. The league tournament will begin on April 22 in Provo, Utah.
