April 06, 2021 | Men's Volleyball
UCLA's redshirt sophomore opposite/outside hitter Kevin Kobrine was named the Sports Imports / AVCA National Div. I-II Player of the Week on Tuesday after his standout performance in a pair of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) wins at No. 9 Grand Canyon last week.
Kevin entered both of last week's matches off the bench to help spark the Bruin outside attack at GCU. Kobrine hit a combined .629 for the two matches and averaged 3.4 kills/set. He connected for a career-best 16 kills on 20 swings, with no errors, while hitting .800 to help UCLA complete a reverse sweep in a five-set win in the opening match in Phoenix. Kobrine produced an incredible 8 kills on 8 swings in set four and totaled 12 kills for the final two sets of the 26-28, 23-25, 25-14, 25-22, 15-11 comeback win. His 18.0-point performance in the match also represented a career-high total.
In the second battle, he once again came off the bench to ignite a Bruin rally. This time he helped UCLA rebound from a 12-19 second set deficit to claim the frame by a 29-27 score. Kobrine was also a force at the service line and added a career-best four aces in the contest which the Bruins won 25-16, 29-27, 19-25, 25-15.
The No. 6 Bruins own a season record of 13-4 and will return to the court on Friday and Saturday for MPSF matches against No. 2-ranked BYU in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. The league tournament will run from April 22-24 in Provo, Utah.
