MVB Falls to Cougars

The No. 6 UCLA men's volleyball team dropped a three-set decision to No. 2 BYU in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match held in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom on Friday evening. Scores of the match were 19-25, 16-25, 17-25. UCLA's record fell to 13-5 while BYU improved to 17-2 on the year. The same two teams will battle again on Saturday.

Kevin Kobrine topped the Bruin attack with 12 kills while hitting .304, but UCLA was out hit by the Cougars by a .455 to .160 margin. It marked an opponent season-best attack percentage andย isย just the third time this season the opposition has hit over .300 for a match. BYU also enjoyed a 8-5 edge at the service line and a blocking margin of 8.0 to 3.0.ย

After trading side outs at the start of the match, UCLA opened up a 9-7 lead after a Merrick McHenry / Cole Ketrzynski block. BYU answered with the next three points to go in front 9-10. The Bruins went up 13-11 after kills from Kevin Kobrine and Austin Matautia.ย The Cougars used a strong service game to score five straight and go ahead 13-16. UCLA cut it to 18-19 after a kill from Ian Parish. Another strong service run upped the margin to 18-23. A Ketrzynski kill snapped that streak, but the Cougars tallied the next two points for the 19-25 win.

Matautia rattled off three straight service aces to help UCLA to a 4-0 start to set two. BYU bounced right back to even the score at 5-all. After being tied at 8-each, the Cougars recorded five of the next six points to open up a 9-13 edge. UCLA sliced the margin to 13-18 after a Alex Knight kill. The Cougars followed with another streak to push their advantage to 14-23 on the way to a 16-25 win. BYU hit .706 for the set and had just one attack error on 34 swings through the first two frames.
