LOS ANGELES – Jaylen Clark put together a career night on Thursday at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom, powering the No. 13-ranked Bruins to a 76-56 victory over Washington State.
The sophomore from Riverside, Calif. secured his first-career double-double, tallying career highs in points (18) and rebounds (11). He also dished out a career-high five assists and picked up a career-high four steals.
Johnny Juzang led all scores with 19 points on 6-9 shooting from the field. UCLA was the superior offensive team on the night, shooting 51.9 percent (28-54) to overpower the Cougars (15-53, 28.3 percent). The Bruins also won the assist battle, 18-8.
Clark led the way on both ends for the Bruins to start the game, knocking down his first three baskets and grabbing two steals to help UCLA build a 12-2 lead at the 15:58 media timeout.
The Cougars would cut the lead to 15-7, but a transition layup from Peyton Watson and a triple from Jake Kyman pushed the advantage to 20-7 (11:49 remaining).
The Bruins held a 10-point advantage before consecutive baskets from Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Clark pushed UCLA's lead to 28-14. After a quick 8-2 run from the Cougars, David Singleton answered with a corner triple as UCLA took a 34-24 lead into the 3:40 media stoppage.
It was a 39-29 game at the break. Clark put up 12 points in the first half, already surpassing his previous career-high total of 11 for an entire game. All nine Bruins who played in the first half appeared on the scoresheet.
Later, the Bruins rattled off an 11-0 run behind baskets from Cody Riley, Kyman, and Clark, giving UCLA its largest lead of the night at 56-38 (13:04 remaining).
UCLA continued to stretch its advantage in the second half, as a corner triple from Juzang put the Bruins up, 68-43, with 7:19 to play. The Bruins maintained control for the rest of the contest, coming away with the win by a final score of 76-56.
UCLA is set to complete a three-game homestand with upcoming matchups against Washington and Arizona State. The Bruins face the Huskies at 7 p.m. PT on Saturday and the Sun Devils at 6 p.m. PT on Monday. Both games are set to air on FS1.
