LOS ANGELES – Sophomore Max Rajcic of the baseball team has been selected the UCLA Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by Ready, for May 10 – May 16.
Rajcic threw the first 8 innings of a combined one-hitter as UCLA blanked WSU 4-0 on Friday night. He struck out a career-high 14 batters in the start, tied for the most single-game Ks of any Bruin pitcher over the last 10 years. He also became the first pitcher in the John Savage era to finish a game with 14+ strikeouts and no walks.
He faced just two over the minimum, with the two runners reaching on a groundball-single and a dropped third strike. Rajcic retired 14 consecutive batters at one point, including a stretch of five straight swinging strikeouts. He didn't walk a batter for the third consecutive start, and now has a 59-2 K-BB ratio over his last seven outings.
Rajcic also earned Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honors for his performance, as he recorded the second-most single-game Ks by a Pac-12 pitcher this season.
It's the second-career Student-Athlete of the Week award and second of the season for Rajcic. He took home the recognition earlier this month following an 11-strikeout outing against Arizona State on April 29.
