Running back Zach Charbonnet, wide receiver Jake Bobo, linebacker Darius Muasau, quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, offensive lineman Jon Gaines II and safety Stephan Blaylock were named to the All-Pac-12 preseason football team announced on Tuesday. Charbonnet was the lone Bruin tabbed for the first-team. Bobo and Muasau were named to the second-team. Honorable mention recognition went to Thompson-Robinson, Gaines II and Blaylock. The squad was selected by the media who cover the teams in the Pac-12.
Charbonnet led Pac-12 rushers last season with seven 100-yard games on his way to racking up 1,137 yards on the ground. He was No. 2 in the conference in rushing yards per game (94.8) and No. 6 in the league in all-purpose yards per game (111.7). Charbonnet ranked No. 22 in the nation in rushing yards (1,137) and in rushing TDs (13). He had multiple catches in six games and is UCLA's leading returning receiver (24 catches) for 2022. The Associated Press voted him the 2021 Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year. He was a second-team All-Pac-12 selection by the conference coaches. Charbonnet rushed for 950 yards and 12 touchdowns in two seasons at Michigan before he transferred to UCLA for the 2021 season. He appeared in 18 games for the Wolverines and made nine starts.
Bobo transferred to UCLA in January of 2022 after appearing in 43 games and making 24 starts at receiver for Duke from 2018-2021. This past season, he started all 11 games for the Blue Devils and hauled in 74 passes for 794 yards and a touchdown. Bobo posted three 100-yard receiving games – 109 vs. Northwestern, 105 vs. Kansas, 102 vs. Louisville – and grabbed a career-high 11 passes in a game against Northwestern. He made at least five catches in nine games, including a season-long 48-yard reception against Kansas. He earned third-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference honors in 2021. His 6.2 receptions per game mark ranked 28th in the NCAA while his 66.2 yards per game average was ninth in the ACC. His junior season, he was the recipient of the Clarkston Hines Award as Duke's top receiver following a 32-catch campaign.
Muasau, who enrolled at UCLA in January after transferring from Hawai'i, has been named to the first-team All-Mountain West Conference squad the past two seasons. He eclipsed the 100-tackles mark in both 2021 and 2020, having posted 109 stops last season on the heels of a 104 total the previous year. In 2021, Muasau led UH in tackles for loss (14.0) and sacks (7.0) while being ranked tied for second in the country with five forced fumbles. In 2020, he led the Mountain West and ranked fourth nationally in solo tackles per game average (7.6) while recording 9.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. Over the past two seasons, he has produced 14 games in which he totaled at least 10 tackles.
Last season, Thompson-Robinson led the Pac-12 in pass efficiency rating (153.9), total offense (274.4 yards/g), points responsible for (182), passing yards per completion (13.69) and passing yards per pass attempt (8.51). He also rated No. 10 in the Pac-12 in rushing yards per game (55.36). Thompson-Robinson has moved into the Top Five at UCLA in career passing yards, career completions and career TD passes. He totaled over 300 yards of offense in games against Fresno State (345), Arizona State (330), Colorado (355) and USC (395). In that USC contest, he ran for two scores and passed for four more.
Blaylock owns the longest games started streak on the team at 31 games and has appeared in 43 contests overall. He has ranked among the top five on the team in tackles in each of the past three seasons. In 2021, Blaylock was credited with a career-high tying 11 tackles in a win over Colorado. He recorded at least five tackles in five 2022 games including eight at Arizona, five in the victory at USC, to go along with six-each in games against both Utah and Fresno State.
