Chiles Wins Floor Gold, Vault Silver at World Challenge Cup

Bruin sophomore posted the highest international floor score of the season.

UCLA sophomore Jordan Chiles won gold and silver medals at the World Challenge Cup in Paris, capturing first place on floor exercise and second place on vault at Sunday's apparatus finals. She also finished in fifth place on uneven bars.

Chiles' day began on vault, where she scored 14.150 on a double-twisting Yurchenko and 13.900 on a Lopez, averaging 14.025. Her marks were an improvement over her qualifying average of 13.95. The U.S. went 1-2 on vault, with Oregon State's Jade Carey taking first place with a 14.375 average (14.750, 14.000).

On uneven bars, Chiles again saw a marked improvement from her qualifying score, going from 13.40 to 13.75 in the final. Her score was good for fifth place.

Chiles finished her day on floor exercise, where she performed an enhanced version of her UCLA floor routine with upgraded tumbling that included a 1.5 through to full-in and a full-twisting double layout. Her final score of 14.05 is the highest international mark of the season so far.

The World Challenge Cup is just the fourth senior international assignment for Chiles in her career. She has medaled in all four competitions, capturing team silver at the 2020 Olympics, winning all-around silver at the 2018 Stuttgart World Cup, and taking home team, vault and floor gold and beam bronze at the 2018 Pacific Rim Championships.

The U.S. team captured a total of 10 medals at the World Challenge Cup, including four gold, with five athletes winning two medals each (Chiles - floor gold, vault silver; Carey - vault gold, beam silver; Shilese Jones – bars gold, floor silver; Brody Malone – high bars gold, parallel bars silver; and Donnell Whittenburg – parallel bars and still rings bronze).
