NO. 1 UCLA WRAPS UP REGULAR SEASON HOME SCHEDULE
No. 1-ranked UCLA (15-1-0, 7-1-0 in the Pac-12) will host its final two regular season home games of the season this week, welcoming Washington State (8-4-4, 2-3-3) on Thursday, Oct. 27 at 7pm and Washington (9-4-3, 3-4-1) on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 2pm. The Bruins conclude the regular season the following week on Nov. 4 at USC.
WIN #500 IN SIGHT
UCLA's next victory will be the 500th in program history. Since the team began NCAA play in 1993, the Bruins have posted a 499-108-48 (.798) overall record in 30 years. Stanford is the only other program in the Pac-12 with 500 victories, and that milestone was reached in 2017, in its 34th season.
SENIOR SALUTE
Prior to Sunday's game against Washington, UCLA will honor eight seniors - fourth-years Sunshine Fontes, Jackie Gilday, Kylie Kerr, Brianne Riley and Kali Trevithick; fifth-years Madelyn Desiano and Maricarmen Reyes; and sixth-year Lauren Brzykcy. These seniors have compiled a four-year record of 62-8-7 (.851), won back-to-back Pac-12 titles in 2020 and 2021, and have led this year's squad to the No. 1 ranking for the last eight weeks. The senior ceremony will take place on the field before the game. Fans are encouraged to arrive to the stadium by 1:30 so as to not miss the festivities.
SCOUTING THE COUGARS
Washington State enters the game with an 8-4-4 overall and 2-3-3 conference record but is winless in its last five games, going 0-3-2. Eleven different Cougar players have scored a goal this season, led by junior forward Margie Detrizio, who has eight goals and five assists (21 points). Detrizio leads the Pac-12 by a large margin in shots with 74 total. Goalkeeper Nadia Cooper, last season's conference goalkeeper and freshman of the year, has totaled five shutouts this season.
THE SERIES WITH WASHINGTON STATE
UCLA holds a 19-5-5 series advantage over Washington State and has won the last two games played at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. The matchups between the two teams have been even, though, since 2015, with each squad winning three games and the two teams tying last season, 1-1, in Pullman. The last time the two teams met in Los Angeles, on April 2, 2021, Reilyn Turner scored two goals, Sunshine Fontes recorded a goal and an assist, and Lauren Brzykcy made five saves in a 4-0 victory.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
Washington enters the week with a 9-4-3 overall record and a 3-4-1 conference record. The Huskies won their last game against Arizona State on Oct. 23, scoring two goals in the final four minutes to beat the Sun Devils, 2-1. Karlee Stueckle scored the game-winner with 51 seconds left on the clock. Fourteen Husky players have scored a goal this season, led by Summer Yates, who has six goals and 18 points.
THE SERIES WITH WASHINGTON
UCLA holds a 22-4-2 series advantage over Washington and has won six in a row in the series, including a 3-1 road win in 2021 during which Lauren Brzykcy made eight saves, and a 1-0 home victory in 2019 that was secured by a 87th-minute goal by Maricarmen Reyes. The Huskies' last win against the Bruins came in Seattle in 2015.
LAST TIME OUT
UCLA completed a weekend sweep in the Rocky Mountains, downing Utah 3-0 on the strength of two first-half goals by Lexi Wright and Sofia Cook and a second-half goal by Ally Cook. Lauren Brzykcy and Neeku Purcell combined to make four saves to lead the Bruins to their 10th shutout win of the season.
McMAHON NAMED PAC-12 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF WEEK
Sophomore Quincy McMahon earned her first-ever Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week after leading UCLA to a pair of road shutouts at Colorado and Utah. The Bruin defense held both teams to single-digit shot totals. McMahon also added an assist, her team-leading fifth of the season, on Lexi Wright's game-winning goal at Utah. The Bruins lead the Pac-12 with a team goals against average of 0.44 and also lead the conference with 10 shutouts.
BRUINS WIN 13 TO START SEASON
UCLA's 13-game winning streak to start the season came to an end after a 1-0 loss at No. 9 Stanford on Oct. 14. The Bruins' 13-0 start was the best start in school history, surpassing the 2001 squad's 11 victories to start the year. Strong starts have been commonplace for the Bruins in recent years, as they have won at least their first eight games in each of the last three seasons.
WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE NUMBER ONE
For the eighth consecutive week, UCLA ranks No. 1 in the United Soccer Coaches poll. The last time UCLA held the top spot in the United Soccer Coaches poll prior to this season was 2017, when the Bruins were No. 1 for five weeks from Sept. 5-Oct. 3. UCLA's Sept. 4 win over No. 1 North Carolina was its second ever over a top-ranked team and second in a row after beating No. 1 Florida State on Aug. 29, 2019.
1-2 PUNCH
UCLA boasts two 20+ point and nine goal scorers in Sunshine Fontes and Reilyn Turner. Fontes ranks second in the Pac-12 in points (23) and game-winning goals (4), fourth in goals scored (9) and seventh in assists (5). Turner leads the conference in game-winning goals (6) and ranks fourth in goals scored (9) and sixth in points (21). The dynamic duo have each recorded a hat trick this season, with Fontes scoring three goals in 48 minutes of action against CSUN on Aug. 25, and Turner recording her second career hat trick on Oct. 2 after scoring three goals in the first 20 minutes of play at Oregon. Fontes has recorded a goal or an assist in eight of UCLA's last 11 games. Turner has two multiple-goal games this season, all in conference play, and has tallied six in her career to move into fifth all-time at UCLA.
HATS OFF
This season, Sunshine Fontes and Reilyn Turner became the first pair of Bruins to record hat tricks in the same year since Danesha Adams and Lauren Cheney did it in 2007. Fontes was the first to record a hat trick, the first of her career, on Aug. 25 vs. CSUN. Turner recorded her second career hat trick in the first half of the Bruins' game at Oregon on Oct. 2. Turner became the fifth player in UCLA history to record multiple hat tricks, joining Traci Arkenberg (5), Sydney Leroux (3), Sarah-Gayle Swanson (2) and Adams (2).
NATIONAL LEADERS
UCLA is amongst the nation's leaders in several categories, ranking second in points per game (8.94), scoring offense (3.06) and goals against average (0.438); third in assists per game (2.81); and fourth in total goals (49) and total points (143). Reilyn Turner leads the nation with six game-winning goals.
TOO FRESH
Ally Lemos and Sofia Cook have earned Top 20 recognition by Top Drawer Soccer on its midseason Top 100 Freshman list, ranking No. 3 and No. 18, respectively. Lemos is one of just two players to start every game for the Bruins, and she leads all field players with 1,209 minutes played. She is tied for the team lead and ranks seventh in the Pac-12 in assists with five and scored her first collegiate goal in the 4-0 win over Arizona State on Oct. 6. Cook, who has played in 15 games and started seven, ranks third on the team in goals (six) and points (15).
BRICK WALL BRZYKCY
Graduate student Lauren Brzykcy has been a nearly impenetrable brick wall this season, leading the Pac-12 in GAA (0.50) and wins (15). She tied her career-high in single-game saves with nine at No. 2 Duke, and she has moved into UCLA's Top 5 in career saves with 198 and counting. With 25 career shutouts, Brzykcy is one away from the Top 5, and her 52 career wins put in a tie for fourth all-time at UCLA. Brzykcy has been honored as the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week three times this season, running her career total to eight, which ties former teammate Teagan Micah for most in school and conference history.
VIVA MEXICO
Three of Mexico's finest - full national team member Maricarmen Reyes and Under-20 national team members Bridgette Marin-Valencia and America Frias - are with the Bruins in 2022 and all saw action for the first time together on Sept. 11 vs. Cal State Fullerton. In that game, Reyes scored the game-winner, a sharp-angled screamer for her second goal of the season, and Marin-Valencia picked up her first collegiate assist in her first game. Frias also made her season debut in that game. Reyes and Marin-Valencia also teamed up to assist on the Bruins' second goal at Pepperdine on Sept. 18, and they combined for three goals (two from Reyes) in UCLA's 4-2 win over Cal on Sept. 23. Wright collected two assists in the Bruins' 4-0 win over Arizona State.
RETURN OF THE MAC
In her first year of action since tearing her ACL in January of 2020, midfielder MacKenzee Vance has shown she is fully back and here to stay. In just her third game, Vance scored her first goal at Pepperdine, collecting a long pass from Madelyn Desiano, swerving past the charging goalkeeper and shooting into the empty net. She picked up her first career assist at Oregon State, making a strong move to lose her defender and then passing to Sunshine Fontes for the one-timer. She has started in the last two games and contributed a goal and an assist in the Bruins' 6-0 win at Colorado and an assist in the 3-0 win at Utah. Vance, who was a member of U.S. Youth National Teams from 2015-20, has played in 10 games this season, totaling two goals and three assists.
KALI COMEBACK
Senior forward Kali Trevithick has spent the better part of her four years on the injured list, having undergone multiple knee surgeries. She played the final six games of the year and totaled two goals and one assist. Trevithick missed all but the final two games of the 2020-21 campaign and all of the 2021 season but finally got back on the pitch on Sept. 11 for her first game since May 5, 2021. She made the most of her return, scoring less than two minutes after entering the game against CSUN. Two minutes after that, she scored her second goal in the Bruins' 5-1 victory. She scored her third goal in three games at Oregon and has now played in 18 career games and 571 minutes at UCLA with five goals and three assists. Turner made it 3-for-3 when she scored the opening goal in the Bruins' 4-0 win at No. 9 Pepperdine. Turner leads the nation with six game-winning goals and has 12 in her career, which ranks 10th all-time at UCLA.

GOALKEEPING CREW SHARE SHUTOUT

Lauren Brzykcy earned the victory, starting and playing 30 minutes before Kelly McManus replaced her for the remainder of the half with the Bruins up 3-0. McManus made one save in 15 minutes of action. In her first game back from the FIFA U-20 World Cup, freshman Neeku Purcell started the second half and played 35 minutes, making one save. Faith Nguyen made her collegiate debut, closing the game and preserving the clean sheet for the entire group. Purcell has played in six other games this season and has yet to allow a goal in 156 minutes, totaling five shared shutouts.
UCLA RECORDS TOP TWO SWEEP
UCLA posted a pair of 2-1 road victories over the nation's top two teams to start September, downing No. 2 Duke on Sept. 1 and No. 1 North Carolina on Sept. 4. Reilyn Turner scored the game-winning goal in both games, breaking the deadlock in the 62nd minute against the Blue Devils and then completing the comeback against North Carolina with an 84th minute goal. Lexi Wright assisted on Turner's game-winner at Duke and scored the tying goal at North Carolina. Defender Jayden Perry scored the Bruins' other goal, converting a penalty kick at Duke for the game's first score. Three players (forward Reilyn Turner and defenders Jayden Perry and Lilly Reale) have 15 starts, defenders Madelyn Desiano and Quincy McMahon have 14 each, forward Sunshine Fontes has 12, and midfielder Maricarmen Reyes and forwards Ally Cook and Lexi Wright have 10 each.
GOALKEEPING CREW SHARE SHUTOUT
All four of UCLA's goalkeepers saw action in the Bruins' 6-0 win over CSUN on Aug. 25.
Goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy tied her career-high in saves with nine at Duke and then made four clutch saves in the win at North Carolina.
