No. 15 UCLA Falls after Late-Game Rally from No. 1 South Carolina
November 29, 2022 | Women's Basketball
Columbia, S.C. – The UCLA women's basketball team conceded its first loss of the season to South Carolina on Tuesday evening in a tightly contested matchup with the top-ranked Gamecocks. The No. 15 Bruins are now 7-1 after the 64-73 road loss.
Charisma Osborne (24 pts, 6 reb, 10-11 FT) led all scorers for the sixth time in eight games, surpassing the 20-point mark for the fifth time this year. Kiki Rice added 16 points on 6-for-13 shooting and knocked down 4-of-5 free throws in the game. Emily Bessoir grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in the game and was the third Bruin to reach double figures (10 points, 2-for-7 3FG).
UCLA led the way through a low scoring first half and put up four nearly-identical scoring quarters in Tuesday's game. Osborne knocked down a three from the left wing -- just a step in from the spot where she launched a killer three-pointer against Tennessee -- midway through the second quarter to put UCLA up 26-17.
The Bruins led by 10 points with 2:47 remaining in the second quarter but the Gamecocks got a series of paint touches to cut into UCLA's lead. Kiki Rice took a charge in transition (Q2, 1:09) to slow South Carolina's barrage inside, and UCLA carried a 31-27 lead into the break.
South Carolina outscored UCLA by four in the third quarter to tie the ballgame when the third buzzer sounded. The Bruins and Gamecocks were locked at 47-47 with 10 minutes to play.
Late foul trouble left an already shorthanded Bruin squad with even less depth off the bench – three Bruins fouled out in the fourth quarter trying to contain the oversized bigs in South Carolina. The Gamecocks used their size advantage to outscore UCLA 26-17 in the final period, pulling off the nine-point comeback victory over the Bruins.
