Bruins Claim Victory in Eugene over No. 17 Oregon, 82-74
December 30, 2022 | Women's Basketball
Eugene, Ore. – UCLA Women's Basketball improves to 13-1 (2-0 Pac-12) after downing the Ducks inside the Matthew Knight Arena Friday night. The win marks the Bruins' second top-20 win of the season (Nov. 20 vs. No. 11/12 Tennessee, 80-63).
Kiki Rice had a career night and led all scorers, posting 21 points in the win. The freshman floor general grabbed seven rebounds, threw four assists and snagged four steals against the Ducks. Charisma Osborne added 17 points before leaving the game after a collision in the fourth quarter. Gina Conti was the third Bruin in double digits, putting 11 on the board to go with her six rebounds and three assists.
UCLA had a season-high 15 steals in the win – the Bruins have had 7 steals or more in each of their 13 victories this year. UCLA converted those into 18 points off turnovers, outpacing the Ducks 18-8 in the category. The Bruins outshot Oregon, shooting 45.6% on the game (37.5% 3FG) to the Ducks' 42.4% (35.3% 3FG).
Despite a slow start from both teams, Rice and Osborne got it going for the Bruins. The two combined for 17 points, and Camryn Brown added a free throw line jumper to round out scoring for UCLA. Brown had seven points (3-4 FG) and three rebounds in the conference matchup.
Londynn Jones started working for the Bruins in the second quarter, hitting a dribble pullup after losing her defender on a pump fake. Jones hit a three a minute later to add to the box score.
Rice had another seven points in the second to bring her total to 12 before the break. The Bruins scored 19 points in each of the first two quarters to hold a 38-32 lead going into the half. UCLA shot 7-for-16 in the first, second and third quarters of the game.
Oregon fought back in the third, claiming their only second-half lead with five minutes to go. Lina Sontag swatted Endyia Rogers before pushing the ball out on the break. Rice connected with Gina Conti to reclaim a three-point lead.
The Bruins led 54-48 heading into the final quarter.
UCLA's lead ballooned to 18 points in the first two and a half minutes of the fourth, forcing an Oregon timeout with 7:26 left in the game. The Ducks brought it within six points but the Bruins weren't done fighting. Gabriela Jaquez tracked down two offensive boards that led to scores, including an and-one finish by senior Cam Brown.
The Bruins would hold onto their eight-point lead and secure the win.
