UCLA ADVANCES TO SIXTH CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
Top-seeded and top-ranked UCLA (21-2-1) has advanced to the NCAA Championship game for the sixth time in school history and first time since 2017. The championship match against No. 2-seeded and No. 2-ranked North Carolina (20-4-1) will take place on Monday, Dec. 5 at 6pm ET/3pm PT at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. and will be televised live on ESPNU. The Bruins earned their way into the final after a 3-0 victory over No. 1-seeded Alabama in the semifinals. ย

BRUINS SEEKING SECOND NCAA TITLE
UCLA will be seeking its second NCAA women's soccer title and 120th overall NCAA title. The Bruins' first and only NCAA Championship came in 2013 in Cary after UCLA defeated Florida State 1-0 in overtime on a 97th minute golden goal by Kodi Lavrusky. ย ย

FINALS MATCHUP WITH UNC
Monday's final will be the second UCLA-UNC championship matchup. The first took place in 2000 in San Jose, Calif., in UCLA's first-ever championship game appearance. North Carolina won that matchup, 2-1. The two teams have met in the NCAA Tournament six previous times, with UNC holding a 4-1-1 advantage. The last meeting came in the 2018 quarterfinals in Cary. The Tar Heels advanced on PKs after a 2-2 tie. UCLA's victory came in the 2013 quarterfinals in Chapel Hill, a 1-0 double overtime victory. The Bruins went on to win the NCAA Championship that season in Cary. ย ย

BLUE BLOODS ARE LAST TWO STANDING
The last two teams to hold the No. 1 ranking in the United Soccer Coaches poll are the last two teams standing. North Carolina held the top spot after the first two weeks of play before UCLA's win over the Tar Heels and No. 2 Duke put the Bruins at No. 1 for the remainder of the regular season. North Carolina and UCLA rank one and three, respectively, in finals appearances with 27 and six. Notre Dame ranks second with eight. ย ย

BACK TO CHAMPIONSHIPย
UCLA will be playing in their sixth championship game on Monday. The Bruins' last championship game appearance came in 2017 in Orlando, a 3-2 loss to Stanford. Two current Bruins were in Orlando for that game - goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy, who was on the bench as a freshman, and UCLA head coach Margueritte Aozasa, who was an assistant coach on Stanford's squad.ย

UCLA in the Championship Final:
2000 - #6 seed (San Jose, Calif.): Dec. 3 - L 1-2 vs. North Carolina
2004 - #14 seed (Cary, N.C.): Dec. 5 - L 1-1 (PKs) vs. Notre Dame
2005 - #1 seed (College Station, Texas): Dec. 4 - L 0-4 vs. Portland
2013 - #2 seed (Cary, N.C.): Dec. 8, W 1-0 (OT) vs. Florida Stateย
2017 - #2 seed (Orlando, Fla.): Dec. 3, L 2-3 vs. Stanford

HOPING TO MAKE HISTORY ย
UCLA head coach Margueritte Aozasa is looking to become only the fourth female head coach to win a NCAA Soccer Championship, joining Becky Burleigh (Florida, 1998), Amanda Cromwell (UCLA, 2013) and Erica Dambach (Penn State, 2015). Aozasa is also looking to become just the second Asian American head coach to lead their team to the NCAA title, joining Hank Leung, who guided George Mason to the 1985 title. A UCLA victory would also tie the school record for most victories in a season wtih 22. ย ย

SCOUTING THE TAR HEELS
North Carolina enters the championship game with a 20-4-1 record. The No. 2-seeded Tar Heels are outscoring opponents 16-5 in NCAA Tournament play and have beaten ย two No. 1 seeds to get to the final, downing Notre Dame 2-0 in the quarterfinals and Florida State 3-2 in the semifinals. North Carolina is seeking its first championship since 2012 and 22nd overall. This is North Carolina's first championship game appearance since 2019. They also made the championship game in 2018. The Tar Heels are 21-5 all-time in NCAA championship games. ย  ย

THE HISTORY AGAINST UNC
UCLA's all-time record against North Carolina is 2-11-2, but both victories have come on the road in Chapel Hill - 1-0 in double overtime in the 2013 NCAA quarterfinals and 2-1 on Sept. 4, 2022. The two teams have met six times in the NCAA Tournament, most recently in 2018 in the quarterfinals in Cary. North Carolina advanced on PKs after a 2-2 tie. The Tar Heels hold the edge in NCAA play, 4-1-1. ย

UCLA'S NCAA HISTORY
The Bruins, who are making their 26th overall and seventh consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament, have a 73-20-7 all-time NCAA Tournament record. UCLA is ย a No. 1 seed for the sixth time in program history and first since 2014. This year's semifinal appearance is UCLA's third in the last six years and 12th overall. UCLA is 1-4 all-time in the finals and last made the Championship game in 2017 in Orlando, losing to Stanford, 3-2. The Bruins are 2-4-1 in College Cups played in Cary, winning the Championship over Florida State in 2013, 1-0 in overtime. ย  ย ย

SEMIFINAL RECAP
UCLA advanced to the championship game for the sixth time in program history after downing Alabama by a a 3-0 score in a semifinal battle of No. 1 seeds. Left back Quincy McMahon led the Bruins, setting up forward Reilyn Turner's game-winner in the 30th minute and adding a goal of her own in the second half. Right back Madelyn Desiano found the back of the net just 66 seconds after McMahon to complete the game's scoring. Goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy stopped all seven goal-bound shots she faced from the nation's top offense en route to her ninth solo shutout of the campaign. ย

BACK TO CAROLINA
UCLA makes a return visit to North Carolina after a successful early September trip during which the Bruins upset both No. 2 Duke and No. 1 North Carolina, 2-1, on their respective home fields. Reilyn Turner provided the heroics in both games, scoring the game-winners in the 62nd minute at Duke and in the 84th minute at North Carolina. Goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy was outstanding in goal in both games, tying her career high with nine saves at Duke and making four stops at UNC. ย  ย  ย  ย

COACHING STAFF HONORED
First-year head coach Margueritte Aozasa and her coaching staff of Gof Boyoko, Molly Poletto and Chelsea Tudela were voted the Women NCAA Division I Pacific Region Staff of the Year by the United Soccer Coaches. In their first year in Westwood, the Bruin coaches led UCLA to a 20-win season, a No. 1 seed at the NCAA Tournament, the program's 12th College Cup appearance and sixth championship game. The Bruins began the season 13-0, the best start in school history, and held the No. 1 national ranking for nine straight weeks, from the first week of September to the end of the regular season. UCLA has allowed just 12 goals this season, while 18 different players have totaled 65 goals. Aozasa became the first rookie head coach ever to win Pac-12 Coach of the Year honors, earning the sixth honor all-time for a UCLA coach.ย

REALE NAMED ALL-AMERICAN, PAC-12 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF YEAR
Sophomore Lilly Reale earned her first career All-America honor, receiving second-team honors from the United Soccer Coaches. Reale was also named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year, joining Abby Dahlkemper as the only UCLA players ever to win the honor. A two-time Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week, she has also contributed offensively, scoring one goal with one assist. Brzykcy and Turner earn their third career honors, Reale is a first-team selection for the second-straight year, and Fontes and Lemos received their first-ever All-Region awards. ย

A total of 31 players have seen game action this year, with 13 playing 20 or more games and 21 playing 10 or more games. ย  ย ย

STALWART STARTERS ย
With a deep and talented squad at her disposal, head coach Margueritte Aozasa has been able to seamlessly shuffle her starting lineup from game to game. Two players, however, have earned starts in all 24 games - goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy and freshman midfielder Ally Lemos. Lilly Reale has 23 starts; Jayden Perry, Madelyn Desiano, Jayden Perry and Quincy McMahon have 22 each; and Sunshine Fontes and Reilyn Turner have 20.

20-POINTERS ย ย
UCLA boasts three 20+ point scorers in Sunshine Fontes (11g, 7a, 29 pts), Reilyn Turner (10g, 3a, 23 pts) and Lexi Wright (7g, 6a, 20 pts), marking the first time since 2017 that the Bruins had three or more players hit 20 points. The Bruins had four that season - Hailie Mace (33), Anika Rodriguez (25), Ashley Sanchez (24) and Jessie Fleming (20). All four Bruins are now playing with their respective national teams (Mace and Sanchez with the U.S., Rodriguez with Mexico and Fleming with Canada).ย

QUICK DRAW MCGRAW ย ย
With three goals in the first 90 seconds of play and six in the first six minutes of play, the Bruins are giving fans ample reason to not arrive fashionably late. Lexi Wright put UCLA on the board 39 seconds after kickoff in the NCAA first round win over Northern Arizona, scoring the Bruins' fastest goal of the year. Reilyn Turner has three goals within the first two minutes this year, scoring at 0:49 at Oregon State, 1:20 at Colorado and 1:51 against Arizona State. The Bruins also have two goals scored in the sixth minute - Madelyn Desiano at 5:02 in UCLA's win over Northwestern in the NCAA Round of 16, and Ally Cook at 5:12 in the 4-0 win over Arizona State. ย  ย

REI-GN OF TERROR ย ย
Junior Reilyn Turner has terrorized opponents this season, scoring 10 goals to record her third consecutive season with double-digit goals. Remarkably, seven of her 10 goals have been game-winners, and four have been game-winners against Top 10 opponents on the road (No. 2 Duke, No. 1 North Carolina, No. 9 Pepperdine and No. 3 Alabama). Turner leads the nation in game-winning goals and ranks seventh in the conference in goals scored. ย She has two multiple-goal games this season, including a hat trick at Oregon, and has tallied six multiple-goal games in her career to move into fifth all-time at UCLA. With 31 career goals, Turner has moved into UCLA's all-time Top 10, tying Sam Mewis for 10th. ย  ย  ย  ย ย

BRICK WALL BRZYKCY
Graduate student Lauren Brzykcy has been a nearly impenetrable brick wall this season, leading the Pac-12 in goals against average (0.50), shutouts (9 solo, 5 shared), save percentage (.861) and wins (21). One more victory will give her a share of the school record for victories. Brzykcy tied her career-high in single-game saves with nine at No. 2 Duke and added eight at USC and seven against Alabama, and she has moved into fourth on UCLA's career saves list with 229 and counting. She is also in UCLA's Top 5 for career shutouts with 29 (fifth) and for wins with 58 (fourth). Brzykcy was honored as the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week three times this season, running her career total to eight, which ties former teammate Teagan Micah for most in school and conference history. Brzykcy also received first-team All-Region honors and earned all-conference honors for the third time in her career, being selected to the second team. ย

Q SCORE SOARING FOR MCMAHON
Quincy McMahon's Q score has been soaring this season and particularly in the postseason. The sophomore left back is tied for the team lead in scoring during this NCAA Tournament with two goals and one assist, and she has also contributed to two postseason shutouts. McMahon, who earned first-team All-Pac-12 honors this season, has played and started in 22 games and ranks fifth on the team in scoring with 12 points and third with six assists. ย  ย  ย

SHINING BRIGHT ย ย
Senior Sunshine Fontes is having a career season in 2022, leading the Bruins with 11 goals and 29 points. Her seven assists rank second on the team and are a career-best for her as well. She ranks in the Top 25 nationally in points scored and is ย third in the Pac-12 in goals and points, second in game-winning goals (four) and sixth in assists (seven). The Wahiawa, Hawaii native was named to the All-Pac-12 second team and earned Pac-12 and National Player of the Week honors on August 29 after recording a hat trick against CSUN and following it up with the game-winner at Santa Clara. ย

MAD GOOD ย  ย
Graduate defender Madelyn Desiano scored her first collegiate goal this season on Oct. 6 and has caught fire in the postseason, scoring a goal in two of the last three games, including the game-winner against Northwestern and a left-footed golazo against Alabama in the semifinals. The Bruins' right back has scored 11 points off three goals and five assists and is one of five players to play in all 24 games this season. ย  ย
