MVB Goes Down at Long Beach State

The No. 2 UCLA Bruins (7-2) fell in straight sets at No. 1 Long Beach State (7-1) in a non-league match played on Friday night in Long Beach before over 3,000 fans. Scores were 22-25, 23-25, 13-25. The Beach hit a UCLA-opponent best of .400 for the match. The Bruins finished at .271 to snap a streak of three straight matches at .367 or better. UCLA matched a season low for aces, with two, and established a new low for blocks at 4.5. The same two teams will square off on Feb. 19 at UCLA's Collins Court in the John Wooden Center at 5 p.m.

In set one, UCLA was the first team to separate, taking leads of 7-5 and then 11-9 on a kill by Merrick McHenry. The Bruins took advantage of a couple of Beach errors and held a 15-13 advantage at the media timeout. A Cole Ketrzynski swing put UCLA up 17-14 and forced a Long Beach timeout. Guy Genis' kill put the Bruins in front 19-16. Beach responded with three consecutive points, on two kills and a block, to even the score. That flurry sparked a 9-3 Beach run to end the set at 22-25. Ketrzynski's kill sliced the gap to 22-23, but Long Beach had the answers down the stretch. Beach outhit the Bruins .385 to .376 in set one. Genis led UCLA with four kills in the frame.

UCLA took early leads of 7-4, after a kill by Ido David, and 9-6, following an ace from Ethan Champlin. The Beach answered with four straight to move in front 9-10 on the way to taking a 10-14 lead. UCLA closed to 12-14 after a McHenry kill, but Beach tallied six of the next eight points to go up 14-20. The Bruins battled back using a Genis kill, a Long Beach error and a block by Genis/ Kevin Kobrine to pull within 19-21. A service error and an ace by David narrowed the gap to 22-23. A service error pushed the Beach to set point. McHenry's swing saved one set point, but Beach responded with a kill for the win. UCLA hit .158 for the frame.

Beach scored the first three points of set three on the way to a 2-6 lead. A Ketrzynski kill and a Champlin swing made it 5-8 and then 7-10. David's swing put the deficit at 10-14. A run of seven straight points catapulted Long Beach into an 11-22 edge. The Beach closed out the set at 13-25 after hitting .429 for the frame with all four of their service aces coming during the frame.
