No. 12 UCLA Earns 79-70 Win Over Stanford

February 08, 2022 | Men's Basketball

STANFORD, Calif. – The No. 12-ranked UCLA men's basketball team got back in the win column with a 79-70 victory over Stanford on Tuesday evening at Maples Pavilion.

Johnny Juzang led all scores with 23 points on the night, his second-straight 20+ point outing and eighth on the season. Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Tyger Campbell added 14 points apiece for UCLA (17-4, 9-3), with Campbell adding a game-high seven assists.

The teams were even on the glass (27-27), but the Bruins forced 11 turnovers and committed just six. UCLA went a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line while Stanford shot 5-for-10 from the charity stripe.

Tuesday night's Pac-12 game became a back-and-forth affair early in the first half, as the score was 18-18 with 11:14 to play. The Bruins took a 23-22 lead after a 3-point basket from David Singleton and a transition runner from Juzang with 9:01 remaining.

UCLA ended the first half with an 11-2 scoring run and led at the intermission, 41-31. Juzang and Jaquez Jr. both scored in double figures in the first half, totaling 11 points and 10 points, respectively.

The Cardinal opened the second half with a 6-0 scoring run, but Juzang answered right back with a four-point play to make the score 45-37 (with 16:29 remaining). The Bruins extended their scoring run to 15 straight points on buckets from Jaquez Jr., Singleton, and Juzang. UCLA led Stanford, 52-37, forcing a timeout from the Cardinal's bench at the 14:45 mark.

Stanford cut the Bruins' lead to seven points before Juzang and Jaylen Clark connected on baskets in the paint, putting UCLA ahead 62-51.

The Bruins increased their margin to 70-58. An offensive rebound by Myles Johnson helped set up Jules Bernard for a second-chance basket to put UCLA ahead by 14 points with four minutes to go in regulation.

Stanford cut the deficit to eight with 1:17 to play, but free throws from Campbell and transition dunk from Clark iced the game away and for the Bruins.

UCLA will return to Los Angeles for a crosstown matchup against USC on Saturday, Feb. 12. The game at Galen Center will get started at 7 p.m. PT on ESPN.

The Bruins' next home game is against Washington State on Thursday, Feb. 17. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. PT on FS1.
