LOS ANGELES --ย No. 3 UCLA (23-4, 4-2 MPSF) fell to No. 2 Stanford (21-2, 5-1ย MPSF) in the semifinals of the 2022 MPSF Championship, 13-7, Saturdayย afternoonย at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. Stanford improved to 56-37ย all-time against UCLA.

The Bruins were led by senior Ava Johnson, who scored a game-high four goals. Freshman Molly Renner scored twice for the Bruins with senior Katrina Drake chipping in the other goal.

Redshirt junior goalkeeper Georgia Phillips got the starting nod in the cage and went the distance, registering 10 saves while surrendering 13 goals.

Makenzie Fischer and Ryann Neushul each had a hat trick for Stanfordย while Maya Avital also registered 10 saves while holding the Bruins to just seven goals and 2-for-14 on power plays.

PERIOD ONE
> Stanford outscored UCLA 4-1ย in the opening period.
> Jewel Roemer opened the scoring with a power play goal for Stanford (5:52).
> Makenzie Fischer converted a penalty shot (5:14) to make it 2-0 Cardinal.
> Neushul scored from two meters (4:42) to push the Stanford lead to 3-0.
> Neushul converted a penalty shot (3:58) to extend the scoring run to 4-0.
> Johnson broke the Bruins' scoreless streak from two meters off a feed from Malia Allen (0:21) to end the scoring in the first period.

PERIOD TWO
> UCLA won the second period, 4-3.
> Johnson opened the scoring in the second period when she took a feed from Hannah Palmer to score her second straight goal (7:34).
> Johnson then completed her hat trick with a power play goal on a feed from Katrina Drake (6:22) to cut the Stanford lead to 4-3.
> After Aria Fischer scored a power play goal for Stanford (5:42),ย Johnson scored her fourth goal off a pass from Maddie Musselman (5:32) to make it 5-4 Stanford.
> Then after Katie Lyons scored for the Cardinal (3:42), Renner struck from the front court (3:13) to make it 6-5.
> Stanford pushed the lead to 7-5 on a second goal by Makenzie Fischer (2:47).
> UCLA trailed 7-5 at the break.

PERIOD THREE
> The Cardinal outscored the Bruins, 2-1, inย the third period.
> Neushul completed her hat trick to open the scoring in the third on a power play (6:44) and then Makenzie Fischer followed with her hat trick on a power play (4:18) to push the lead to 9-5.
> Allen then set up Drake for a score from the front court (3:44) to make it 9-6 Stanford.
> The Bruins trailed 9-6 heading into the fourth.ย 

PERIOD FOUR
> Stanford outscored the Bruins 4-1, in the fourth period to provide the 13-7 final score.
> Sophie Wallace scored back-to-back goals to open the scoring in the fourth (7:16 and 6:03) to push the lead to 11-6.
> Renner scored her second on a power play (5:14) off an assist from Val Ayala, but Stanford answered with a power play goal from Roemer (4:40) to keep it a five-goal game at 12-7.
> Eleanor Facey scored the game's final goal (1:10) to provide the 13-7 final.

UP NEXT
The Bruins will take on No. 4 California in the MPSF third-place game on Sunday, Apr. 24 at 12:45 p.m. PT at USC's Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
