Bruins Stand Strong Despite Heartbreaking Defeats at USC

LOS ANGELES – UCLA Track & Field wrapped up its 2022 season with its annual dual meet against USC on Sunday afternoon at Loker Track Stadium, performing admirably with multiple strong individual performances despite defeats in the team standings.
It was announced during the meet that the UCLA women won the team title, but a scoring error was later recognized and the Trojans ended up with the victory by a razor thin 82-81 margin.
The USC men secured an 86-76 team victory.
Distance
UCLA's distance squad was dominant on Sunday, picking up 49 of a possible 54 points across the men's and women's 1500m, 3000m, and 3000m steeplechase competitions.
Emma Tavella (10:13.43) and Peter Herold (8:48.59) led 1-2-3 sweeps of the women's and men's steeplechase competitions, respectively. Darius Riley ducked under the nine-minute barrier (8:58.03) in his first-ever steeple to earn a point for the Bruins. Freshman Patrick Curulla earned a win in the 3000m in his first-career USC dual, crossing the line with a time of 8:39.36. Alyssa Bautista (9:50.70) and Carlie Dorostkar (9:59.72) each picked up PRs in the women's 3000m and led a 1-5 sweep in the event for the Bruin women.
Jumps/Hurdles
Amber Jackson picked up the win in the women's high jump in her first-career USC dual, clearing 1.70m (5-07.00) on her first attempt at the height. Fellow first-year Sydney Johnson was second in the competition with a mark of 1.65m (5-05.00). Johnson also picked up a point in the long jump with a third-place finish and a wind-aided mark of 5.95m (19-06.25). Matthew DeRoos snagged three points for the Bruin men with a second-place finish in the men's triple jump (14.85m, 48-04.75).
Throws
Natalie Ramirez had an impressive day in multiple events, picking up lifetime-best marks in the shot put (15.33m, 50-03.50) and discus (52.51m, 173-1). Lyvante Su'emai earned the win in the shot put in her first USC dual meet, clearing 16.07m (52-08.75) for a PR in the event. Aidan Elbettar led a 1-2-3 sweep for the Bruin men in the discus, taking the win with a lifetime-best mark of 58.51m (191-11). Lauren McFall (47.15m, 154-8) and Anoop Khatra (59.51m, 195-3) picked up wins in the women's and men's javelin competitions, respectively.
Sprints/Middle Distance
UCLA's women's and men's squads both posted season-best performances in the 4x400m relay. The Bruin women went 3:31.17 while the men dropped their season mark to 3:04.18. Shae Anderson picked up the win in the women's 200m competition, going 23.18 for a season-best mark in the event. Myles Misener-Daley was strong in the men's 400m, taking second place and three points in the event with a time of 45.89. Rose Pittman picked up a win in the women's 800m with a season-best time of 2:05.12, while Gwyn George earned a point in third at 2:07.41.
Pole Vault
Katerina Adamiec (3.71m, 12-02.00) and Camryn Thomson (3.56m, 11-08.00) went 1-2 in the women's pole vault for the Bruins. Tate Curran (5.01m, 16-05.25) and Kyle Brown (4.76m, 15-07.25) similarly went 1-2 on the men's side.
Next Up
UCLA is headed to the Pac-12 Championships in Eugene, Ore. The three-day meet is set to kick off on Friday, May 13.
