Five Bruins Earn NVA/AVCA All-A Honors

Five Bruins – Outside Hitter Ethan Champlin, Middle Blocker Guy Genis, Opposite Kevin Kobrine, Middle Blocker Merrick McHenry and Setter Miles Partain – have been honored as NVA/AVCA Division I-II Men's Volleyball All-America selections in an announcement on Monday by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Champlin, McHenry and Partain were chosen to the NVA/AVCA Div. I-II first-team while Genis and Kobrine were picked for the second-team.
Champlin, a first-team All-MPSF selection, led the Bruins during the regular season with 12 double-digit kill performances. He recorded at least one ace in 9 of the 12 MPSF league matches this season, including a career-high six against Concordia. Champlin equaled the school record with four consecutive aces in a win at UC San Diego. Early in the season, he tied his career-high with 18 kills in a win over Penn State.
McHenry, a finalist for the Ryan Millar Award as the nation's top middle attacker, rates second in the nation in hitting percentage at .527. He hit at least .500 in 17 contests over the course of the season. McHenry is 15th in the NCAA in blocks/set at 0.99. He totaled a season-best 17 kills in match against Stanford. Last season, he earned honorable mention All-America honors.
Partain, the 2022 MPSF Player of the Year, has guided the Bruins to the highest rated offensive hitting percentage in the nation this season at .375. UCLA has hit at least .300 in each of its last 16 matches. Also an offensive threat, Partain has recorded 17 multi-kill matches in 2022. He rates seventh in the NCAA in set assists at 10.26 per set.
Genis, the 2022 MPSF Freshman of the Year, ranks 11th in the NCAA in blocks/set (1.01). He has hit at least .500 in 16 matches this season and led or tied for the team lead in block assists in 13 contests. Genis posted a season-best nine block assists in a match at Stanford earlier this year.
Kobrine, a finalist for the Bryan Ivie Award as the nation's top opposite, rates 19th in the NCAA with a .371 hitting percentage. During the season, he was named both the MPSF's Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week. The defensive honors came after compiling 20 digs and 8 block assists in matches against Stanford. The offensive recognition resulted from a .511 swing percentage for 26 kills in a pair of wins over USC.
The awards selections were made by the AVCA NCAA Division I-II Men's All-America Committee: Dan Friend of Lewis (chair), Kevin Burch of Ohio State, John Cash of Lincoln Memorial, David Hunt of Pepperdine, Jay Hosack of George Mason, Ali'I Keohohou of Mt. Olive, Alan Knipe of Long Beach State, Jeff Lennox of Barton, Ray Lewis of Central State, Mark Pavlik of Penn State, Kevin Ring of UC San Diego, and John Speraw of UCLA.
UCLA will play Pepperdine on Tuesday night at 5 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom in Opening Round Match 2 of the NCAA Men's Collegiate Volleyball Championship.
