The Week In Reviewย ย ย
UCLA went 2-2 last week, dropping a Tuesday game at UC Irvine before taking two of three on the road at No. 2 Oregon State:
As is the case most years, the Bruins have been adept so far in 2022 at limiting free passes. Entering the week, UCLA is fourth in the country in WHIP (1.19), seventh in walks allowed per nine innings (2.9), and sixth in K-BB ratio (3.3). The Bruins have sizable advantages over their opponents in walks drawn vs. issued (270-160) and HBPs drawn vs. issued (93-41).ย
UCLA appeared in all five major national polls this week, checking in as high as No. 13 (Collegiate Baseball) while also appearing at No. 18 (Baseball America), No. 20 (D1Baseball), No. 21 (NCBWA), and No. 22 (USA TODAY Coaches Poll). The Bruins have been ranked as high as No. 6 this season (May 2, Collegiate Baseball), entered the year ranked as high as No. 22 in the preseason polls, and have been nationally ranked in all but three weeks over the course of the season.ย
The All-Time Series Against Californiaย ย ย
UCLA owns a 186-181 mark all-time against California, including a 30-21 mark under head coach John Savage. The Bruins have won six of their last seven series against Cal, only dropping a 2021 set at Jackie Robinson Stadium over that span. Under Savage, UCLA has won 11 of its 17 series against Cal overall. Active Bruins with strong career numbers against Cal include: Michael Curialle (11-22, HR, five RBIs in six games), Darius Perry (4-9, two doubles in three games), Max Rajcic (2.79 ERA over 9 2/3 innings), and Cody Schrier (6-16, three doubles in three games).ย
This Year Against the Golden Bearsย ย ย
The Bruins recovered from a Friday night loss to take two of three from Cal in Berkeley from Apr. 22-24 of this season. UCLA had 19 hits on Saturday as part of a 9-4 win, with strong performances in particular coming from Darius Perry (3-5, two doubles, three RBIs) and Kyle Karros (3-5, HR, three RBIs). Gage Jump keyed a rubber match win for UCLA with 4 2/3 innings of one-run ball. The Bruin bullpen was unscored upon until a two-out homer in the ninth. UCLA hit .310 as a team for the weekend, including strong performances from Curialle (.583 BA), Perry (.444), Karros (.429), and Schrier (.375).ย
The All-Time Series Against Oregon Stateย ย ย
UCLA owns a 44-41 record all-time against the Beavers, including a 20-30 mark under head coach John Savage. The Bruins have won each of the last three weekend series against OSU. That streak includes a 2-1 performance on the road this season, representing the program's first series win in Corvallis since 2010. Active Bruins with strong career numbers against OSU include: Charles Harrison (4.2 IP, 0 R, 4 K), Luke Jewett (2.1 IP, 0 H), Kyle Karros (.364/.440/.591, HR), Kenny Oyama (3-10), Max Rajcic (8.1 IP, 1 ER, 12 K), Daylen Reyes (2-6), and Alonzo Tredwell (3.2 IP, 0 R, 2 SV).ย
This Year Against the Beaversย ย ย
The Bruins won two of three on the road at OSU in the final regular season series for both squads. Max Rajcic threw the first six innings of a combined three-hitter as UCLA won 4-1 on Thursday. The bullpen tossed five scoreless innings while Carson Yates and Jake Palmer starred on offense in a series-clinching 7-4 Friday win before OSU salvaged the weekend with a 9-3 win in the finale. Charles Harrison (4 IP) and Alonzo Tredwell (3.2 IP) were both unscored upon in multiple relief outings to lead the Bruins.ย
The All-Time Series Against Washingtonย ย ย
UCLA leads the all-time series over Washington, 55-30, including a 31-20 mark under head coach John Savage. UW has had the upper hand in recent years in the head-to-head series, winning five of the last six weekend sets between the two schools. Active Bruins with strong career numbres include Kelly Austin (4.1 IP, 1 ER), Daniel Colwell (4.1 IP, 0 ER), and Ethan Gourson (.444/.583/.556). ย
This Year Against the Huskiesย ย ย
The Bruins suffered a road sweep in Seattle from May 7-8 (the teams played a Saturday doubleheader after Friday's game was rained out). The final two games of the series were decided by one run. Carson Yates (4-8), Ethan Gourson (4-9), and Jake Palmer (4-11, three runs) had strong weekends with the bat.ย
Early Birdsย ย ย
UCLA is outscoring its opponents by a healthy margin (338-232) overall in 2022, and that advantage is particularly acute in the early innings. In the first three innings of games, the Bruins are outscoring their opponents 139-73 (plus-66), including a 67-29 advantage in the first inning alone. The Bruins are 27-7 this season when scoring first and 20-6 when scoring in the first inning.
Palmer Locked Inย ย ย
Graduate first baseman Jake Palmer has been one of the team's most consistent hitters this season. Since Mar. 5, he's gone 51-136 (.375) while reaching base a further 35 times via walk or HBP. He reached base in 41 consecutive starts during that time (snapping the streak on May 19 at Oregon State), by far the longest streak of any Bruin this season. Palmer's 49 free passes (36 BB, 13 HBP) rank second on a team that has excelled in that area, and he's nearly doubled his batting average since early March (from .162 to .322).ย
Good Startย ย ย
UCLA's starting pitching has been excellent in 2022, as the group of Jake Brooks, Max Rajcic, Kelly Austin, Ethan Flanagan, Thatcher Hurd, Gage Jump, and Daniel Colwell have combined for the following stats:
