Hoogmartens Earns Spot in NCAA Singles Draw

INDIANAPOLIS โ Freshman Alexander Hoogmartens of the UCLA men's tennis team earned an at-large selection to the 64-player field for the 2022 NCAA Division I Championships singles tournament, the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Subcommittee announced Tuesday.
The singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 23-28 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex in Champaign, Illinois, after the conclusion of the team championship, which runs from May 19-22. The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will serve as host.
All matches shall be the best-of-three sets. No-ad scoring and a 7-point tiebreaker (first to seven points, must win by two points) at six-games-all will be used for all matches.
Hoogmartens holds a 14-6 singles record in his first season as a Bruin. In dual-match play, he went 9-4. Hoogmartens possesses a 6-3 mark against nationally-ranked opponents, holding wins versus No. 2 Arthur Fery of Stanford (6-3, 6-1 โ March 26), No. 14 Luc Fomba of TCU (6-2, 6-2 โ March 10), No. 70 Lleyton Cronje of UCF (4-6, 6-1, 6-2 โ Oct. 4) and No. 79 Joshua Charlton of Oregon (3-6, 6-4, 6-1 โ April 3), among others. The Beersel, Belgium native has seen his own ITA singles ranking climb as high as No. 23. He is currently slotted at No. 32. Hoogmartens earned player-of-the-week honors from the ITA and Universal Tennis, as well as the Pac-12, after notching victories against Fery No. 102 Yuta Kikuchi of California.
