Seven Bruins to Compete at World Championships in Eugene

Seven Bruins โ€“ three rising seniors and four alumni - will compete at the World Athletics Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. from July 15-24. Current Bruins competing are Ismail Turner (USA, relay pool), Catherine Leger (Canada, 200m) and Makenzy Pierre-Webster (Canada, 4x100m relay pool). Alumni competitors are Jessie Maduka (Germany, triple jump), Nicholas Scarvelis (Greece, shot put), Dotun Ogundeji (Nigeria, shot put), and Ferdinand Edman (Norway, 1500m).

As part of the relay pool, Turner could compete as early as Friday, July 15 in the mixed relay. The heats begin at 11:45am PT, with the final contesting at 7:50pm. Turner is also in the mix for the 4x400 relay, with heats beginning on Saturday, July 23 at 5:40pm and the finals on Sunday, July 24 at 7:35pm. Turner, a 2022 All-American, finished eighth in the 400m at the USATF Outdoor Championships to make Team USA.

Leger will compete in the 200m heats on Monday, July 18 at 6pm. The semifinals take place on Tuesday, July 19 at 6:05pm, and the finals will contest on Thursday, July 21 at 7:35pm. Leger earned All-America honors in both the 4x100m relay and the 4x400m relay this past season. She has a personal best 200m time of 23.17 and a NCAA and season-best time of 23.32, set April 1 in victory at the West Coast Relays. Leger placed second in the 200m with a time of 23.01 (+2.1 wind) at the Canadian Outdoor Championships to qualify to the World Championships.

Pierre-Webster earned her spot in the 4x100m relay pool after a fifth-place finish in the 100m at the Canadian Outdoor Championships. The 4x100m relay heats take place on Friday, July 22 at 5:40pm, and the final will take place on Saturday, July 23 at 7:30pm. Pierre-Webster set her personal best time in the 100m at the Pac-12 Championships in May, running 11.48 in qualifications. She and Leger are part of UCLA's school-record relay squad that ran 43.39 at the 2022 NCAA Championships. Pierre-Webster earned All-America honors in both outdoor relays this season and set a school 200m indoor record with a time of 23.33.

Maduka begins competition on Saturday, July 16 at 10:30am in the triple jump qualifications. The final will be held on Monday, July 18 at 6:20pm. The 2018 Pac-12 triple jump champion and five-time All-American has a personal-best of 14.00m (45-11.25) both indoor and outdoor. She also holds UCLA's all-time indoor record with a mark of 13.81m (45-03.75), set in 2018. Maduka finished third at the German Championships in June, jumping 13.77m.

Scarvelis and Ogundeji will both compete in the shot put on Friday, July 15, beginning at 6:55pm, with the final taking place on Sunday, July 16 at 6:27pm. Scarvelis is in Group A, while Ogundeji is in Group B. Both UCLA alums have personal best throws of 21.05m. A 2016 Olympian, Scarvelis is a three-time shot put All-American and Pac-12 champion, having won in 2014, 2015 and 2016. He also won the Pac-12 discus title in 2016. Ogundeji was an eight-time All-American in the shot put and discus and holds UCLA's No. 4 all-time shot put mark of 21.05m (69-0.75).

Edman was an All-American in both cross country and indoor track and field (DMR) at UCLA in 2016. He will compete in the 1500m heats on Saturday, July 16 at 6:30pm. The event semifinals take place on Sunday, July 17 at 7pm, and the final on Tuesday, July 19 at 7:30pm Edman's personal best time in the 1500m is 3:37.98. ย
