Top-Ranked Bruins Take Down Titans, 5-1

The Bruins (6-0) dominated the first half, peppering the Titans with a number of quality shots before Cal State Fullerton (3-2-3) had its first shot, a Kaytlin Brinkman strike in the 24th minute that required a diving save by Bruin goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy.
After being denied on back-to-back shots in the 17th and 19th minute, Ally Lemos' persistence paid off in the 31st minute. Following a quick corner kick from Quincy McMahon, Lemos served a ball into the box to an unmarked Ally Cook, who headed it in for her first official goal as a Bruin.
Maricarmen Reyes made it 2-0 in the 43rd minute, taking a seemingly impossible angle on a long-distance shot from the right side and netting her second goal of the season.

Trailing 2-0 at the half, Cal State Fullerton closed the gap to one after a free kick by Kaya Hawkinson bounced past the Bruins and into the back of the goal in the 60th minute. But the Bruins would respond just six minutes later after Sofia Cook pounced on a bad Titan pass and fed Sunshine Fontes streaking towards goal. With just the Titan goalkeeper to beat, Fontes coolly slotted it past Mia Ranson for her team-leading fifth goal of the season to put UCLA up by two once again.
Trevithick, who has endured multiple knee surgeries during her career, entered the game in the 81st minute for her first action since May 5, 2021. Not even two minutes later, Trevithick made an instant impact. Freshman Bridgette Marin-Valencia, who was also making her season debut, sent a cross into the box for Trevithick, who one-timed it into the back of the net for her first goal since November of 2019. Her score sent her teammates into a frenzy, and it would repeat just two minutes later, when Trevithick challenged a Titan defender for the ball in the box and saw it ricochet off her leg into the goal.
She's waited over two years for this moment. And it happened twice in two minutes tonight!

"It was like a movie moment for that to happen," said UCLA head coach Margueritte Aozasa. "We were just elated. The joy that we felt was much of a reflection of the joy she has for the game and just the struggle that she's gone through."
The Bruins outshot the Titans, 23-7, and held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Ranson made seven saves, while Brzykcy had one in 76 minutes of play. Freshman Neeku Purcell played 14 shutout minutes to close the game.
UCLA will next host San Diego State on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 7pm before traveling to No. 14 Pepperdine on Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1pm in the final non-conference game of the year.
