Bruins Fall to Beavers after Late Comeback Effort, 77-72

The Bruins fall to 13-2 (2-1 Pac-12) after losing to Oregon State. Londynn Jones (17 pts) and Gina Conti (19 pts) put up season-highs in the defeat.

Corvallis, Ore. – UCLA Women's Basketball (13-2, 2-1 Pac-12) suffered its first loss in conference play after falling to Oregon State (9-5, 1-2 Pac-12) in Corvallis, Ore., Sunday. The Bruins snap a six-game winning streak with the result.
 
"Credit to Oregon State, they did a great job" said The Michael Price Family UCLA Women's Head Basketball Coach Cori Close. "They played to their strengths, and they executed their game plan with more consistency than we did ours. Raegan Beers is a handful, and she's just continued to get better."
 
Beers had 22 points (8-10 FG) and 15 rebounds in Sunday's conference matchup.
 
Kiki Rice led the way for the Bruins, shooting 7-for-13 before fouling out in the fourth quarter. The freshman had her second-consecutive 20-plus point game (20 points, 2-3 3FG, 4-4 FT) in Sunday's matchup. Graduate transfer Gina Conti added 19 points (7-15 FG), knocking down four triples on nine attempts. Londynn Jones posted a season-high 17 points, shooting 50% from beyond the arc (5-10 3FG). Charisma Osborne sat out against the Beavers due to an injury sustained in the fourth quarter of UCLA's win over No. 17 Oregon on Friday. Gabriela Jaquez (2 pts, 3 reb) earned her second start of the season in Osborne's absence.
 
Lina Sontag added five points off the bench, shooting 1-for-1 from deep in the game. Emily Bessoir led the Bruins in rebounding, grabbing seven in the game.
 
The Beavers shot out to an early lead behind a 10-0 run over the first four minutes of the game. The Bruins kept pace with Oregon State for the remainder of the quarter, outscoring the Beavers 10-8 over the final six minutes of the first quarter, but trailed 18-10 going into the second.
 
Two freshmen, Rice and Jones, paced the Bruins in the second, combining for 12 points (4-5 FG, 2-3 3FG) in the quarter. UCLA trailed 38-27 going into the break.
 
Coming out of halftime, the Bruins were aggressive and attacked the Beaver backcourt. Gina Conti knocked down a midrange jumper, and Kiki Rice converted two-consecutive and-one to bring UCLA within five. Jones sunk a three-pointer and the Bruins trailed by two points with 7:29 to go in the third.

The Bruins and Beavers traded buckets for the rest of the quarter, and Conti capped a seven-point quarter with a steal and layup to beat the buzzer. UCLA was behind by four points, 54-50, heading into the final 10 minutes.
 
Conti had eight points and Jones scored six in the fourth. Jones hit a three-pointer that gave UCLA a 64-63 lead with 3:37 left to go. The Bruins allowed the Beavers to score seven-consecutive with trips to the line from Beers and Talia von Oelhoffen. UCLA came within three points twice behind a herculean effort from Conti, who scored six points in the final 30 seconds, but the team could not manage to regain the lead. Oregon State held onto a 77-72 lead when the final buzzer rang.

The Bruins are back home on Sunday, Jan. 8 to host cross-town rival USC inside Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. UCLA downed the Trojans in the first meeting between the teams on Dec. 15 (W, 59-56). Sunday's game will be a Blue Out, and the first 1,000 fans inside the arena will receive a Blue Out t-shirt.
