LOS ANGELES – UCLA sophomore shortstop Cody Schrier was named to USA Baseball's 2023 Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List, it was announced on Friday afternoon.
Schrier was one of 55 players named to the watch list for the Golden Spikes Award, which is handed out annually to the top amateur baseball player in the country. This is the 46th annual iteration of the award.
The San Clemente, Calif. native represents UCLA's 17th selection on the GSA Preseason Watch List since 2008, when USA Baseball began archiving that information. The Bruins have placed at least one student-athlete on the preseason watch list in five consecutive years and nine of the last 11 seasons dating back to 2013.
This is the latest in a series of preseason honors for Schrier, as he was also named a Preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball while also coming in at No. 6 in D1Baseball's preseason positional power rankings for shortstops.
Schrier slashed .298/.383/.492 in 2022 en route to consensus Freshman All-America honors. He led the team in a wide swath of offensive categories, including home runs (nine), extra-base hits (31), and total bases (127). His nine homers were the most a UCLA frosh since 2010, and he had a pair of walk-off hits for the Bruins including a game-winning home run in the 11th inning against Loyola Marymount on Apr. 5.
Fan voting will once again play a part in the Golden Spikes Award in 2023. Amateur baseball fans will be able to vote for their favorite players on GoldenSpikesAward.com, starting on May 22 with the naming of the Golden Spikes Award semifinalists. USA Baseball will announce the finalists for the award on June 8 and fan voting will open at GoldenSpikesAward.com concurrently, remaining open through June 21.
Schrier and the UCLA baseball team – ranked No. 12 in the Baseball America Preseason Top-25 – officially open the 2023 season with a three-game set against Omaha starting on Friday, Feb. 17.
