IRVINE, Calif. – No. 3 UCLA (12-2) fell to No. 2 USC (12-0) in the semifinals of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational at UC Irvine on Saturday, 13-10.

A total of six Bruins got into the scoring column in the loss, including a team-high three goals from graduate student Val Ayala.

Redshirt senior Georgia Phillips got the start in the cage and went the distance, recording four saves while allowing 12 of the 13 goals.
 
The Trojans jumped out to a 5-2 lead at the end of the first period. Sophomore Emma Lineback scored to tie the game at 1-1 (5:55) but the Trojans scored twice to lead 3-1. After a power play goal by Ayala (3:03), the Trojans scored two more times in the quarter.

Freshman Sienna Green and graduate student Katrina Drake both scored in the second quarter to cut the Trojans' lead to 5-4. The two teams traded goals until Drake's second score of the game made it 8-7 USC with 7:34 to go in the contest. But USC broke it open in the fourth period with three straight goals to build an 11-7 lead with 3:56 remaining. The Bruins wouldn't get closer than three goals the rest of the way.

The Bruins return to action tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. PT when they take on No. 4 California in the third-place game.
