Redshirt junior middle blocker Merrick McHenry was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation / Molten Player of the Week and the offtheblockblog.com National Middle Attacker of the Week in announcements made on Monday and Tuesday. McHenry helped UCLA deal No. 9 Pepperdine a couple of defeats which clinched a perfect 12-0 MPSF record and marked the first time a Bruin squad had navigated a regular season conference schedule without a loss since the 1995 team went 19-0.
McHenry, who was awarded Defensive Player of the Week honors, averaged 2.38 blocks per set and 1.0 digs per set in the wins over the Waves. He also connected for 23 kills on 34 swings with just one error while posting a .647 hitting percentage. In match one, he tied his career-high with six digs and added a team-best seven blocks. In match two, McHenry was credited with a career-high 11 block assists while recording a team-high 14 kills, just one shy of his season high.
McHenry's efforts at the net led to UCLA enjoying a 34.0 to 15.0 edge in total blocks over the course of the two matches. The Bruin total of 18.5 blocks in match two was a season-high team effort and marked the 13th time this year UCLA has achieved a double-digit block total.
The Bruins, who have posted a 27-2 overall record and are No. 2 in the latest AVCA Coaches Poll, return to the court on Thursday afternoon in the semifinal round of the MPSF Tournament being held at Stanford. UCLA will meet the lowest remaining seed after Wednesday's quarterfinal matches at 4:30 on Thursday in Maples Pavilion. The MPSF Tournament winner will receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Men's Collegiate Volleyball Championships which will be held at George Mason University April 30-May 6.
