Junior outside hitter Ethan Champlin and true freshman setter Andrew Rowan each received Player of the Week honors on Monday for their play in a pair of Bruin wins last week at Grand Canyon. Champlin was selected as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) / Molten Offensive Player of the Week. Rowan was chosen as offtheblockblog.com's National Setter of the Week.
Champlin hit .478 for the week and led UCLA to a pair of wins at No. 5 GCU with double-digit kills in each match. In match one, Champlin recorded a season-best 15 kills and added six digs and a season-best two block solos. In match two, he compiled 10 kills while hitting .474. Over both matches, he averaged 3.93 points per set and handled 38 out of 39 GCU serves without reception error.
Rowan set the Bruins to a plus-.400 hitting percentage in each win over GCU. He had two kills, two aces and 48 set assists while the team connected at a .439 rate in a four-set win in match one. In the second match, Rowan added a kill, an ace, a block solo and 38 set assists while the team hit .448. UCLA, which leads the nation in hitting percentage this season, has recorded a .400 or better hitting percentage in seven of the past 10 matches. Rowan now has recorded a service ace in 13 of the last 14 matches.
The Bruins (8-0 in MPSF) return to action in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) with a home-and-home series against the Trojans. USC comes to Westwood on Thursday for a 7 p.m. match in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. The Bruins journey to the Galen Center for a Saturday match at 7 p.m. Both of those matches will be broadcast by the Pac-12 Network. One more league win will secure the top seed for the Bruins in the MPSF post-season tournament. Next week, UCLA concludes the regular season with a pair of matches against Pepperdine.
