Rising senior Rosemary Varney of the UCLA women's rowing program has been selected to the U.S. women's quadruple sculls for the upcoming World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Bulgaria.
 
This summer's Under 23 Championships will take place from July 19-23 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. This marks Varney's first-ever selection on the USRowing Under 23 team and the second consecutive year in which the UCLA women's rowing program has had a student-athlete selected for the Under 23 Championships. In July of 2022, Ellen Ulitsky finished in sixth place in the world in the quadruple sculls at the annual Under 23 event.
 
Varney had been competing earlier this month at the women's sculling camp at the Oklahoma City High Performance Center in Oklahoma City as part of the selection camp process.
 
In the spring of 2023, Varney primarily stroked the Bruins' second varsity eight crew (2V8+). She also stroked the Bruins' varsity eight crew (V8+) in the team's season-opening dual-meet regatta against USC.
 
Varney is expected to row bow seat in the women's quadruple sculls at the Under 23 Championships next week in Bulgaria. Also selected to the USRowing women's quadruple sculls are Meena Baher of Harvard University, Lauren Benedict of the University of Virginia and Catie Castle of the University of Rhode Island.
 
This regatta serves as the premier event for rowers under the age of 23 and offers a total of 22 events. The U.S. will have entries in 17 of the 22 boat classes.
 
At the 2022 World Rowing Under 23 Championships (held in Varese, Italy), the United State won seven medals – including three golds, three silvers, and one bronze. The U.S. ranked second in the World Rowing medal standings behind Italy, and third in the total medal count behind Italy and Germany.
