EUGENE, Ore. – Rising sophomore Michael Pinckney has captured the individual national championship in the hammer throw event at the 2023 USATF U20 Outdoor Championships in Oregon Friday.
Pinckney threw a for a mark of 67.03m (219-11) on his first attempt inside Hayward Field, and it would ultimately earn him the national championship. He is the first Bruin since Otito Ogbonnia to earn a gold medal at a U20 meet. Ogbonnia was the 2019 Pan American U20 Championships shot put champion.
The Bruin thrower will continue to compete at the national meet in two more events; Pinckney is slated to compete in the U20 men's shot put final at 1:15 p.m. PT on Saturday, followed by the U20 men's discus throw final at 3 p.m. PT.

Hunter O'Brien will also compete in the U20 national meet; the Bruin pole vaulter will begin his event at 12:30 p.m. PT.
