LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's soccer team scored three second-half goals to power past Rutgers, 4-0 on Saturday afternoon at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Graduate striker Jack Sarkos scored his second brace of the year.
Two other Bruins joined Sarkos on the score sheet. Graduate transfer, Sean Karani scored his first goal as a Bruin, and Cam Wilkerson recorded his second goal of the year.
The Bruins (2-1-1) broke through in the 30th minute when Jose Contell crossed to Sarkos, who finished with a right-footed shot past Rutgers goalkeeper Ciaran Dalton, putting the Bruins ahead, 1-0.
UCLA came out strong to start the second half. In the 53rd minute, Wilkerson recovered the ball from his previous blocked shot and dribbled past a few Rutgers defenders. He then smashed the second shot into the top left corner of the net to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead.
Karani found the back of the net in the 72nd minute after a second chance goal. His initial shot was saved by Dalton and he collected the rebound and buried into the back of the net. His goal extended the Bruins lead to 3-0.
Sarkos scored his second goal of the game in the 84th minute sliding on the end of a cross from Tommy Silva and rocketed the finish into the upper part of the net. The brace from Sarkos raised the Bruins lead over Rutgers to 4-0.
The Bruins controlled the shot department over Rutgers (1-3-1) by an 18-10 margin.
Goalkeeper Sam Joseph recorded his first career clean sheet and put up four saves.
UCLA's next match is Sunday Sept. 17 at Cal State Fullerton's Titan Stadium. Kickoff is at 6:00 PM PT.
