LOS ANGELES – Junior Omar Morales on the UCLA men's golf team was named Pac-12 Men's Golfer of the Week, it was announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon. This marks the second week in a row that a Bruin has won the award.
Morales claimed his second collegiate medal and first of the season at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational on Oct. 15 with a score of 11-under 205. He recorded two rounds of 4-under 68 to open the tournament and shot a 3-under 69 in round three. Morales totaled 15 birdied across the three days and bogeyed just once in each of his final two rounds.
The Puebla, Mexico native is swinging a hot stick, shooting in the 60s in five of his last six rounds.
Morales' victory marked UCLA's second medal in back-to-back events with freshman Luke Powell winning his first medal at the Hamptons Intercollegiate on Oct. 3. The Bruins last won two individual medals in the fall portion of their schedule in the 2012-2013 season (Jonathan Garrick and Pontus Widegren).
Morales is the third Bruin to medal at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate, joining Eddy Lai (2019) and Erik Flores (2009).
Shortly after his victory, Morales flew out to Abu Dhabi, UAE to compete in the 2023 World Amateur Team Championships for Team Mexico in its quest for the Eisenhower Trophy (Oct. 18-21).
This past summer, Morales competed in his first major championship event at the 123rd U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club (June 15-18).
